Detroit Tigers have 2 players ranked among MLB Pipeline's top 10 prospects

MLB Pipeline this week revealed its updated top 100 rankings of baseball's top prospects, and two Detroit Tigers jumped into the top 10 late in the summer.

Outfielder Max Clark, the Tigers' 2023 first-round pick, is the No. 7 prospect on MLB Pipeline's ranking, and right-handed starting pitcher Jackson Jobe, the team's 2021 first-rounder, is No. 8. Both were the third overall pick in their respective draft.

Clark, 19, was promoted in late July to High-A West Michigan, where he is batting .288 (19-for-66) with six doubles, a triple and seven RBIs in 16 games. He slashed .286/.386/.421 in Low-A Lakeland with seven homers, 11 doubles and three triples across 73 games. He also had 26 steals in 28 attempts, and was named to the All-Star Futures Game.

Jobe, 22, is the highest-ranked pitcher on MLB Pipeline's ranks, but has had an injury plagued season. A left hamstring strain sidelined him May 2 through July 4. On July 20, he led Double-A Erie to a combined no-hitter by throwing six scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

"Jackson makes everything easier," his catcher Eliezer Alfonzo said after the game. "Everyone knows about that talent that he has — the ability to dominate the batters and the competitive attitude that makes him a great pitcher."

Jobe has been dominant in 15 starts between Erie (12) and West Michigan (three during his rehab assignment), pitching to a 2.01 ERA with 66 strikeouts against 30 walks in 62⅔ innings. He has allowed just 34 hits and one home run.

West Michigan infielder Kevin McGonigle was not ranked in the previous edition in January, but is now at No. 33, and Tigers rookie league shortstop Bryce Rainer, their 2024 first-round pick drafted 11th overall, is ranked No. 61. Toledo (Triple-A) infielder Jace Jung slid four spots to No. 64.

McGonigle just suffered a fractured hand and his season is likely finished. He hit .309 with five home runs in 74 games for Low-A Lakeland (60 games) and the Whitecaps (14 games).

The Tigers in January's preseason edition had four players in MLB Pipeline's top 100: Clark (No. 13), infielder Colt Keith (No. 22), Jobe (No. 25) and Jung (No. 60).

The Tigers are one of three teams with two prospects in the top 10, and only five organizations had more prospects than them, each with six.

"One quick if imprecise way to measure the strength of star talent in an organization is to calculate what we call Prospect Points (100 for the No. 1 prospect, 99 for No. 2 and so on)," MLB's Jim Callis wrote. "The Cubs have the most Prospect Points with 336, narrowly edging the Tigers (332), Rays (325), Twins (321) and Red Sox (320)."
