Discount retailer closes two stores on State Street in Boise. Will more follow?

The Family Dollar store at 2901 W. State St. in Boise has closed.

A sign in the store’s window Wednesday afternoon said “everything must be sold,” but the doors were locked and the parking lot sat empty. Another message, scrawled on cardboard, said “permanently closed.”

It’s the second discount variety store to close on the stretch in the last month.

About a mile and a half down the road, the Dollar Tree store at 4614 W. State St. in the Collister Shopping Center has closed, too. Inside, the store is gutted.

Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, said it would close hundreds of “underperforming” stores this year. The Family Dollar store on State Street in Boise is one of them.

Dollar Tree, which built its brand selling everything for $1 or less, acquired Family Dollar in 2015 with the hope that combining would cut costs, grow its customer base and fend off competitors like Dollar General.

But in March, the company said it would close about 970 “underperforming” Family Dollar stores, including 600 in the first half of the 2024 fiscal year and 370 at the end of each store’s respective lease term. Dollar Tree said in a news release that it also plans to shutter about 30 Dollar Tree stores, again at the end of each store’s lease term. It didn’t specify which stores would close.

A sign on the State Street Family Dollar store said that the company is closing that store only, and the sign encouraged customers to shop at the next-nearest store on West Overland Road in Boise.

Family Dollar now has just a few remaining stores in the Treasure Valley, including two in Nampa and one in Kuna.

Dollar Tree still has over a dozen stores in the Valley, with several in Boise. It’s unclear if any more stores in the area are slated to close. A spokesperson for the company did not respond to calls requesting comment from the Idaho Statesman.

Dollar Tree, known for its $1 or less price point, changed its primary price point starting in late 2021 to $1.25 because of inflation. It’s also added $3 and $5 “plus” sections to many of its stores nationwide. In March, the company said it would raise its primary price point again to $1.50 and sell items costing up to $7.
