Dolly Parton unveils massive ‘Smoky Mountain DNA’ track list and 2 new songs

Dolly Parton continues to share her East Tennessee with fans, with much help from her family. The legendary country artist has released two new songs from her upcoming musical and visual Parton family project and revealed the album’s 37-song track list.

“For me personally, this is one of the most important albums I’ve ever made – because it’s family,” Parton wrote about “Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables.”

“My granddaddy, the Rev. Jake Owens taught us about faith at his little country church, but on the front porch of our Tennessee mountain home, our Parton and Owens kin taught us about music. Grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins, they loved music, they all made music,” Parton continued.

From the album, Parton released its title track, “Smoky Mountain DNA,” which celebrates Parton’s heritage and musical roots.

“A Rose Won’t Fix It,” featuring Heidi Parton, Dolly’s niece, was released, too. Heidi shines on the lead vocals while Dolly sings background.  Dolly originally recorded the song for 1988’s “Hungry Again,” but it ultimately was left off the album, according to Rolling Stone.

Dolly Parton and Family at the Bijou Theatre

Dolly Parton and her family filmed concerts at the Bijou Theatre back in May for the “Smoky Mountain DNA” project. Details about the performances were kept hush, but we know they were filmed as part of a four-part documentary series that accompanies the album.

The documentary features interviews with Parton and numerous family members, and has a particular focus on Rev. Jake Owens, Parton’s grandfather. Owens instilled the family with a profound respect for faith, music and storytelling.

Knoxville has played a prominent role in Parton's life, including her early performances on the on the "Cas Walker Show."
