On June 16, an emaciated St. Bernard puppy passed away after fighting for his life for several days. The canine was brought into Cincinnati Animal CARE on June 14. He was in terrible condition when the shelter first examined him. The Saint Bernard was unresponsive and having a cardiac arrest, so he was immediately shifted to emergency care. Unfortunately, after days of close monitoring, the puppy still couldn’t make it.

Ohio shelter looks for answers after death of emaciated St. Bernard puppy

Saint Bernard Asgard was brought into Cincinnati Animal CARE on Friday after a passerby found him in the Bond Hill neighborhood in Ohio. The puppy wasn’t responsive, and minutes after arriving at the facility, he started having a cardiac arrest. Shelter staff moved him to the clinic, performed CPR, and gave him two blood transfusions because he was pretty anemic.

In an Instagram post, the shelter stated that the emaciated St. Bernard puppy was only one year old or maybe younger. He weighed only 42 pounds when an average Saint Bernard pup should weigh around 100 pounds at that age. It took about five to seven staff members and two dogs to help Asgard, as the canines donated blood for the transfusion.

Unfortunately, even after the staff’s extensive rescue efforts and his foster parents’ 24-hour care, the emaciated St. Bernard puppy couldn’t make it. He passed away in the medical foster home on Sunday, where he was being cared for. Moreover, the shelter’s medical director, Amanda Gilbert, told WKRC, “He’s one of the worst I’ve seen in a while.”

While the shelter doesn’t want to assume the worst, they are investigating the death of the emaciated St. Bernard puppy. The shelter wants to look into the pup’s predicament as Asgard was very young. Moreover, the dog breed isn’t common, so finding one in a terrible condition alerted the authorities. So, if it were intentional, they would like to hold the suspect accountable for what they did to the canine.
