Brian Williams to Host Election Night Special on Prime Video (Report)

Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams will reportedly host a live election night special on Prime Video, marking Amazon’s first go at news coverage.

Though the deal is not final, The L.A. Times reports that it will differ from traditional election coverage and rely on state-by-state calls made by the Associated Press, as opposed to an internal decision desk examining data and calling results. Veteran TV producer Jonathan Wald, who worked with Williams at NBC, would oversee the production. TVLine has reached out to Amazon for comment.

The special would be Williams’ first major project since signing off as host of MSNBC’s The 11th Hour in December 2021. He first joined NBC News in 1993, and previously served as chief anchor and managing editor of NBC’s Nightly News, succeeding veteran newsman Tom Brokaw in 2004.

Williams’ career became embroiled in controversy in February 2015, when the anchor was hit with an unpaid, six-month suspension from Nightly News after it was found that he had falsely claimed that his helicopter was hit by a grenade in March 2003, as he covered the Iraq War. He was subsequently replaced by current anchor Lester Holt, and transitioned to a new role at MSNBC, before taking on The 11th Hour in 2016.

Our sister publication Variety was first to report Williams’ potential election night special.
