The Smithfield All-Stars' improbable run began with an opening loss in the Metro Regional Tournament in Bristol, Conn., before the RI champs won three straight games, including a 7-1 victory over Massapequa Coast, N.Y., in the tournament finale, to advance to the LLWS in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The Rhode Islanders went 2-2 in the national tournament, ultimately losing to the eventual overall champion, El Segundo, Calif. The team was honored with a hometown parade in Smithfield on Sept. 3, and on Saturday will be cheered by Red Sox fans at Fenway Park.
