'FBI' Boss Teases an 'Important Player' Will Die in Season 6 Premiere

A grim fate awaits one of the beloved characters of FBI when the hit series returns for its sure-to-be-explosive Season 6 premiere on CBS Tuesday night. At least one member of the New York fed squad's inner circle will meet their end in the episode, titled "All the Rage," and the repercussions of that loss will rock the unit throughout the rest of the season, according to series executive producer and showrunner Rick Eid.

In a new interview with Parade, Eid confirmed what Missy Peregrym (who plays Special Agent Maggie Bell) recently told TV Insider about an imminent character death—specifically, that "a family member" will be killed in the new season—and he added that this devastating loss will happen sooner than you might expect.

"The team loses an important player in the premiere episode. The consequences of this tragedy will linger throughout the season," Eid explained. "The premiere episode is definitely surprising—and very emotional."

Though he didn't reveal exactly who it is that we'll say goodbye to in the premiere, Eid did share that this sudden death will be especially impactful for one person in the series, who'll take it too much to heart.

"One of our characters feels responsible for this person's death," he explained. "These feelings of anger and guilt will definitely reverberate throughout the season."

The central event of the episode will be a catastrophic bus explosion that kills nearly a dozen innocent civilians, and it'll be up to the special agents to take down the terrorist organization and actor(s) responsible. Whether that incident is what causes this mysterious death, though, remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, fans of the Dick Wolf procedural are already braced for another fan favorite to bid adieu to the central show, as Santel VanSanten's Nina Chase is moving to the spinoff FBI: Most Wanted this season. However, Eid revealed that she'll continue to be a presence on the main show, particularly when it comes to the relationship (and child) she has with Stuart Scola (John Boyd).

"Nina will return to FBI on occasion," he promised, adding, "She and Scola are involved romantically and raising a child together, so there are lots of reasons for them to interact. We're currently working on an episode in which they are required to go undercover together."

For Scola's part, his experience with newfound fatherhood will take a toll on his professional life, and we can expect to see that play out in the new season as well.

Overall, the FBI faithful can expect Season 6 to turn its attention more on the agents' home lives than in previous seasons, as the "main focus" of the new episodes "is exploring how their private lives intersect with—and impact—their professional lives."

One pivotal element of that deeper dive into the off-duty lives of the agents is the introduction of a new romantic counterpart for Omar Adom "OA" Zidan (Zeeko Zaki), and Eid said the character will change the game a bit for OA, as his new lady love will be very distinct from the partners we've seen him with in the past.

"She's different than anyone he's ever dated before. But her lifestyle and social group will present some issues," Eid hinted. Sounds juicy!

FBI Season 6 premieres on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
