FDA Recalls Popular Milk Alternative in 27 States

  • Hood recently announced a voluntary recall of Lactaid milk due to potential contamination concerns over trace amounts of almonds.

  • The affected products include 96 oz containers of five varieties of lactose-free milk across 27 states.

  • No health issues have been reported due to the recalled products at this time.

Before you enjoy your morning cup of coffee or bowl of cereal, you may want to examine the carton of milk in your fridge. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that HP Hood LLC is voluntarily recalling five varieties of their popular Lactaid milk (a dairy-free milk alternative) sold in 27 states due to potential contamination of a common allergen.

While no health issues have been reported concerning the recalled products, Hood has issued a voluntary recall “out of an abundance of caution,” the company explained in a statement made to Good Morning America on Monday.

“This issue was discovered as a result of routine maintenance programs which revealed the potential for trace amounts of almond,” the FDA reported. The allergen, which is not listed on the product label, poses the risk of a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction,” the FDA stated in the official recall announcement.

The Lactaid products included in the recall include five varieties of their 96 oz containers: Lactaid Whole Milk; Lactaid 2% Milk; Lactaid 1% Milk; Lactaid Fat-Free Milk; Lactaid 2% Calcium Enriched Milk. The products were shipped to retailers in the following 27 states: AL, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, TX, VA, WI, and WY.

Additionally, the recalled products contain the code 51-4109 P2. If you have any of the affected variations purchased in one of the states listed above with the code 51-4109 P2, the FDA advises you to check if the product contains one of the Best By Dates listed here. Only the products containing the specified code and affected Best By Dates are included in the recall.

If you have purchased a recalled Lactaid Milk product, the FDA advises you to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. You may also call Hood Consumer Affairs at 800-242-2423. The line is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET.
