HBO has released the first trailer for Stephen King's new vampire horror Salem's Lot.

Inspired by King's 1975 novel of the same name, the film centres around a successful writer who encounters a bloodthirsty vampire in his hometown (via Variety).

Salem's Lot will have its premiere at Beyond Fest later this month, before landing on streaming service Max on October 3.

"Salem's Lot follows Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), a successful writer who moves back to his hometown of Jerusalem's Lot to write his next novel, inspired by an experience he had in an abandoned house in the town," reads the official synopsis for the film.

"His arrival coincides with the purchase of the house by Kurt Barlow (William Sadler), an ancient vampire using his human familiar Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) to turn the citizens of the town.

"As more and more locals are transformed into vampires, Mears and his human allies are trapped in a fight for their lives."

The spine-tingling trailer sees Pullman's character Ben return to his hometown of Jerusalem's Lot to research the strange goings-on in the area.

"I've always written stories about things that are so terrible, you'll run away until your brain won't remember," he admits to a young college graduate.

During his interview with the local priest, Ben soon learns that things aren't as they seem.

"There are some folks who had some kinda unusual experiences," reveals a tense Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey), before a group of vampires begin to take control of the town.

Later, Ben hears a loud thud coming from a coffin, while a corpse unexpectedly comes back to life in the coroner's office.

"Things have gone bad in the Lot now," admits one resident, as chaos continues to erupt. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into here."

Later, Ben creates a ragtag group to fight off the evil presence, before being faced with a mob of angry vampires that try to kidnap him.
