Five new exhibits open Nov. 3 at Gadsden Museum of Art

The Gadsden Museum of Art will host openings for five new exhibits from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 3, according to a news release.

Artists whose works are debuting are Ryan Akers (Barbara Reed Gallery, second floor), Abby Henderson (Courtyard and Piano Galleries), Carol Hill (first-floor main gallery), Hannah Hill (first-floor main gallery) and Michael Swann (Leo Reynolds Gallery, first floor).

Akers is a University of Alabama graduate now based in San Antonio. He received a master of fine arts degree from UA earlier this year and received fellowships, honors and scholarships there.

According to the news release, he uses recycled textile felt in his installation-based work that is “inspired by the emotive nature of shape” and incorporates “observations made while moving through the world.”

Henderson is a former employee of the museum and currently attends UAB, majoring in graphic design. Other UAB students’ work will be included in her exhibit.

Carol Hill has a degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Alabama and is a longtime art teacher in local schools. According to the release, her works are “inspired by the patterns and designs found in the organic lines of nature.”

Hannah Hill is her daugher and is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Her paintings, according to the release, “draw from personal experiences, desires, and fears intertwined with a penchant for self-reflection and her upbringing in the foothills of Appalachia.”

Swann, a Birmingham native and graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, owns Gallery Vox in Tarrant. He’s primarily a painter in multiple mediums, but also is involved in airbrushing, pinstriping and printmaking and airbrushing.

Light refreshments will be served at the openings.
