Spartanburg Humane Society participated in Spartanburg-based women’s lifestyle magazine Elysian’s second annual CatWalk FurBaby event, held at Sony Hall last Thursday. The charity fashion event brings fashion designers, models, nonprofits organizations and pets together on the runway and allows the nonprofits to compete for three awards while bringing attention to their cause.

Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, won the People’s Choice award; Operation Kindness of Texas won the Publisher’s Pick, and Second Chance Rescue of New York won the Judge’s Award.

While the Spartanburg Humane Society didn’t win one of the cash prizes, CEO Angel Cox said the experience was “fantastic” and that their team, consisting of Greenville designer Christina Strayer, model Tatum Mogck, and a young Border Collie mix named Louie, did Spartanburg proud.

“It was really wonderful to represent the Humane Society at that level,” Cox said. “Like the song says, ‘If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.’ That's how we felt. We made it there, and we looked good. We really did hold our own. So, I felt fantastic about it, and the dogs were fantastic.”

One of the five dogs, Percy, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, was adopted in New York by the model he walked with and her husband.

Ziggy, a six-year-old terrier mix, walked with M*A*S*H star Loretta Swit and was adopted Monday after being featured on WSPA’s Pet of the Week.

Fellow dog models Chester, a terrier mix, and Kirk, a two-year-old wire terrier, were adopted in Spartanburg Tuesday.

Louie, the five-month-old puppy who model for the humane society, is still looking for his forever home. Cox said he’s very smart, learns quickly, and did well in the crowds and chaos of the runway show and the hotel.

“He does like to chew on things just like all puppies,” Cox said. “He is your typical puppy, but he does learn very quickly. He is a very smart dog, and he did not let the crowds of New York, of all of the snapping photographers during the runway show, bother him at all. He held his own on the stage.”
