Football: Ketcham, Marlboro and Haldane win big in season openers

Admittedly, coach Bryan Hogan said of his Roy C. Ketcham football team, "it's been a tough go of it" the last several seasons as the program has endured a rebuild. In fact, it had five years since they'd won an opening game.

So, them ending that streak on Friday was significant and the victory carries for them more value than just a 'W' to their record.

"We've got a lot of kids who've been on the team for a while, been through the tough times, and they're hungry," Hogan said. "There's a renewed attitude and a strong desire to reverse that trend."

Kenrick Williams ran for a touchdown and caught another, helping the Storm surge in a 34-13 road win over Section 9's Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Jaden Turner ran for a touchdown, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter. Dylan Fay and Dean Fitzsimmons each rushed for a touchdown. Roosevelt last fall had its turnaround season, going 6-4 and surpassing its win total of the previous three seasons combined.

"It's certainly a great feeling to get off to a good start," Hogan said. "These guys had a good offseason and preseason, and they want that to translate. We're proud of how they did tonight."

Marlboro 29, Spackenkill 3: Salvatore Montaperto Jr. rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns, including one from 40 yards, and made 10 tackles to lead the Iron Dukes in a season-opening win on Thursday.
