Pair of former Texas Tech golfers make Olympics field for Paris

Texas Tech golf programs are set to have two former players competing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Shannon Tan was among 60 women's qualifiers announced this week, and Ludvig Aberg was among the 60 men's qualifiers announced last week. The men's competition is Aug. 1-4 and the women's Aug. 7-10. Both are 72-hole tournaments at Le Golf National, which hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Tan turned pro in January, midway through her sophomore season at Texas Tech after she earned a Ladies European Tour card before Christmas. She won her pro debut in February, scoring a four-stroke victory at the LET's Magical Kenya Ladies Open.

Tan's the first golfer from Singapore to compete in the Olympics since the sport returned to the games in 2016. The 20-year-old is No. 181 in the world rankings.

In the Ladies Italian Open that concluded June 16, former Texas Tech player Amy Taylor won by one shot and Tan tied for third. Tan has three other top-15 finishes this year on the Ladies European Tour.

Aberg turned pro a year ago, after his senior season at Tech, and has been one of the sport's rising stars. In addition to winning twice since turning pro, Aberg was runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Masters, finished eighth at the Players Championship and tied for 12th at the U.S. Open.

The 24-year-old from Sweden is No. 4 in this week's world ranking.

According to the International Golf Federation, the top 15 world-ranked players are eligible for the Olympics with a limit of four players per country. Beyond the top 15, players are eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.
