Four games to watch in Week 6 of the high school football season in the Savannah area

As Week 6 of the high school football season in Georgia approaches, things are getting interesting as there are some big region matchups that could mean a lot when it comes to playoff seeding.

One of those games will be played at Calvary Day on Friday night as Jenkins visits the Cavaliers with first place in Region 3-3A on the line.

Benedictine is also back in action after two weeks off, and Effingham County is set to host South Effingham in one of the top rivalries in the Coastal Empire.

Here are four games to watch this week in the Greater Savannah area, along with a complete schedule of games involving Savannah area teams.

Four Savannah-area high school football games to watch this week

Jenkins at Calvary Day, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

This game is expected to decide the Region 3-3A championship as Jenkins (3-1, 3-0 in region) makes the two-mile trip to face the host Cavaliers (3-1, 3-0) in a battle between one of the top public schools in the Coastal Empire in Jenkins against a traditional private school power in the Cavaliers.

Jenkins came down to Class 3A after making a memorable playoff run to the Class 5A state quarterfinals last season. The Warriors' only loss of the season came in their first game against a Lowndes squad that is 5-0 playing in Class 6A.

Jenkins is coming off a dominating 51-7 win over Beach and the Warriors have a strong run game that is averaging 255 yards per game. The Warriors have five players who have rushed for more that 100 yards with Jayaun Albert (234 yards), Ryan Scott (229 yards) and Trenton Rhodes (218 yards) leading the way. Rhodes rushed for 113 yards on five carries in the win over Beach behind a line anchored by blue-chip recruit Cam'Ron Thompson.

After losing 49-7 at Lowndes in the opener, Jenkins has allowed just 6.3 points per game. Senior linebacker Reico Collins had two interceptions, returning one for a score, in the win over Beach and leads the squad with 29 tackles. Shawn Lee has six sacks and Isaac Smith has four sacks.

Calvary has been playing well behind quarterback James Mobley IV, in his first year as a starter. The sophomore lefty has completed 78% of his passes for 845 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Thomas Blackshear, the senior receiver who has committed to Georgia, missed Friday's 48-8 win over Windsor Forest with an injury, but is expected back for this one. He has 13 catches for 346 yards and three scores in two games. Senior Doopah Coleman has 15 catches for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Ca'Den Jones leads the team in rushing with 219 yards and three scores.

Senior linebacker Cutter Powell leads the Cavs with 38 tackles and three sacks, and sophomore defensive back Emerson Lewis already has four interceptions on the year. Senior defensive tackle Walter "Buddy" Mathis Jr. anchors the unit and recently announced his commitment to LSU.

Westminster at Benedictine, Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium

Benedictine is back in action after two weeks off and the Cadets (1-2), ranked No. 3 among Class 4A teams in the state by the AJC, should be rested and ready as Westminster (3-2) comes to town.

BC quarterback Stephen Cannon has impressed in his first season as the starter as the junior has thrown for 629 yards with five touchdown passes and two interception in three games, while rushing for 88 yards and two scores. He picked up an offer from Virginia last week.

His top target has been junior Bubba Frazier, a hot recruit who has 16 catches for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Joshua Washington had a breakout game against Burke County and has nine receptions for 174 yards and two scores.

The Cadets are stacked with talent on both sides of the ball as senior offensive tackle Jacobe Ward has committed to Auburn, while linebacker Third Scroggins is committed to Miami. Defensive back Micah Williams has offers including Georgia Tech and North Carolina.

South Effingham at Effingham County, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Expect a packed house at Rebel Field at Bob Griffith Stadium as the cross-county rivals meet up for the 31st time. Effingham leads the series 18-12 and has won the last four meetings and seven of the last eight.

Effingham County (1-3, 1-1 in Region 1-5A play) is coming off its first victory of the year with a 35-14 win at Bradwell. The Rebel offense has been excellent ― averaging 35 points per game. In his first year as the starter, junior quarterback Tucker Perkins has thrown for 996 yards and seven scores with just one interception, while competing 66% of his throws. Ryan Wells is a primary target as the senior has 13 catches for 304 yards and three scores. Jacques King has 18 catches for 253 yards and two scores.

J'Mere Doe-Davis and JR McKenzie have combined for 351 yards rushing and 10 rushing touchdowns for the Rebels.

South Effingham (0-3, 0-1 in region) has struggled offensively as the Mustangs are averaging 13.6 points per game. Sophomore Khyran White leads the squad with 164 yards rushing.
