A sequel to iconic comedy Freaky Friday is well underway with Disney confirming a release year for the project.

With Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising the roles of mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman, the follow-up to Mark Waters' 2003 movie is expected to hit cinemas in 2025.

Walt Disney Studios marked the announcement with a picture of the two stars holding hands on set. Eagle-eyed fans will know the promotional snap is a nod to the body-swap plot as Lohan is sat outside Curtis's trailer, while the Halloween protagonist is on the stairs of her co-star's trailer and doing the 'rock on' gesture, just as teen rocker Anna would.

"The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!" the caption to the post noted on Twitter/X.

In Freaky Friday, the two women had to adjust to life in each other's shoes (quite literally), realising it wasn't as easy as they'd imagined.

Translating the challenges of the original film to the present day, the sequel is set to see older Anna and Tess deal with the consequences of another inexplicable body swap twist and improve their relationship in the process.

Alongside Lohan and Curtis, Freaky Friday 2 will see several stars reprising their roles from the first movie, namely Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao. New additions to the cast include Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Sophia Hammons.

Officially greenlit in May 2023, the new movie is directed by And Just Like That...'s Nisha Ganatra from a script by Jordan Weiss (Dollface).

Throughout the years, both Curtis and Lohan had said they'd be willing to return for a sequel, with the Oscar-winning star teasing a round two was closer than ever to being a reality last year.

"It's going to happen. Without saying there's anything officially happening, I'm looking at you in this moment and saying, 'Of course it's going to happen.' It's going to happen," Curtis told Variety in February 2023.

The sequel to Freaky Friday will be released in 2025.
