Further details shared about standoff in 2800 block of S.W. Indian Hills Road

Shawnee County Sheriff Brian C. Hill on Friday revealed the names of two men arrested after a standoff involving numerous law enforcement officers Thursday in the 2800 block of S.W. Indian Hills Road.

Taken into custody were Nathaniel Javier Ayala-Hinkle, 26, of Topeka, and Francisco Javier Ayala-Silva, 55, of Topeka, he said.

No shots were fired and no one was reported hurt, Hill said.

A Shawnee County sheriff's deputy late Thursday afternoon saw a man who was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant standing in the driveway of a house in the 2800 block of S.W. Indian Hills Road, Hill said.

The deputy tried to make contact with the man, who immediately ran inside the house, he said.

Deputies approached the house and were confronted by a second man who carried an AR-style rifle, Hill said.

"When deputies confronted that subject, he refused to comply with any law enforcement commands and performed movements consistent with chambering around inside the firearm," he said.

Numerous law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene.

Deputies established a security perimeter and managed to get in touch with everyone inside the house, Hill said.

"After a 24-minute standoff, one subject exited the residence and was taken into custody," he said. "After an hour elapsed, the second subject, who confronted deputies with the firearm, exited the residence and was taken into custody."

Ayala-Hinkle was booked into the Shawnee County Jail, where records said he was being held late Friday in connection with interference with a law enforcement officer and on outstanding Shawnee County warrants charging him with one count each of aggravated battery, domestic battery, criminal damage to property and violating a protective order.

Ayala-Silva was booked into the jail in connection with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of interference with a law enforcement officer, Hill said.

Jail records indicated Ayala-Silva was no longer an inmate Friday evening.

No formal charges had been filed.
