Georgia football stayed in the top spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll after an open date in its schedule this past week but Texas closed the gap slightly.

The Bulldogs on Sunday remained ahead of the No. 2 Longhorns, which improved to 4-0 with a 51-3 win against Louisiana-Monroe.

Georgia plays No. 4 Alabama on Saturday at 7:45 ET in Tuscaloosa in a game pitting 3-0 teams. The Crimson Tide also was off Saturday.

The Bulldogs stayed put at No. 2 in the new Associated Press poll Sunday behind No. 1 Texas. Alabama stayed at No. 4.

Georgia rankings update

Georgia received 35 of 55 first-place votes in the coaches poll after getting 42 first place votes a week earlier.

The Bulldogs were followed in the coaches poll by Texas, Ohio State, Alabama and Ole Miss in the top five that remained the same. Tennessee moved up a spot to No. 6.

Other first-place votes went to Texas with 18, and Ohio State with 2.

Georgia received 13 of 62 first-place votes in the AP poll. Texas went from 35 first-place votes to 44.

Georgia now will play four straight SEC games before another open date on Oct. 26.

“We're trying to get better all the time, so I've never had a bye week that I've ever had in all my years coaching that wasn't about improvement,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “It's about detailing that improvement and how are you going to attack it. Are you going to do the same thing you've done every year? Well, you may not have the same team.”
