German Shorthaired Pointer’s Frustration Over Flies Is Such a Monday Mood

The end of summer and the beginning of fall bring us some of the most beautiful weather of the year. Warm sunlight and clear skies make spending a day on the water or hiking through the woods ideal. Though the temperature may be perfect for us and our dogs, the bugs are also fans of this season.

That’s what turned a relaxing outing for this German Shorthaired Pointer into a frustrating experience. While her parents tried their best to keep those pesky flies away, these determined insects made it clear they wanted to be along on the adventure.

Take a look at this video from September 16 to see how she attempted to manage these pirates.

Poor Sophie (@pointerpawprints)! This good girl knows nothing ruins a day on the boat like having those darn flies buzzing around your head. As this lovely girl points out, bugs are like Mondays; even though no one likes them, they keep returning. So true! Considering our poor dogs can’t use a flyswatter to eliminate them, it must be even more annoying. This German Shorthaired Pointer can’t take these intrusive insects. Her parents report they put her in quite a mood once she’s under attack. That’s fair! Even with the towel draped around her head and body as a deterrent, it doesn’t lift her spirits. However, her sister Maddi has a different perspective and is just happy to be on the water. Just like human kids, dogs of the same breed and from the same family can have very distinct personalities.

Is There a Safe Insect Repellent for Dogs?

Most insect repellents contain ingredients that are not safe for dogs to use. While some essential oils might help, it’s best to check with your vet before using them, as many are also considered toxic to dogs. Planting flowers like marigolds or herbs like basil in the yard can be natural deterrents to reduce the number of bugs that bother our pets. Keeping your dog’s fur clean can also prevent them from attracting insects, and if all else fails, you can try using a towel wrap like Sophie’s.

People agreed about bugs and Mondays! Viewer @davidandliberty responded, “You’ll get no argument from me. That’s exactly what Mondays are like.” It’s true! Viewer @karin.miller reported, “Lol. My English pointer is the same. So unhappy with flies, bugs, insects.” I’m not a fan of them either. Viewer @krizzycricket remarked, “Never thought about wrapping a towel to help with the flies, cool!” It’s a terrific idea if your dog doesn’t mind wearing it.

Although the cooler weather might bring the end of boating season, it also brings the end of the bugs. Even if you’re not a fan of the cold, that’s something to look forward to.
