Gina Torres Says 'It’s Sad' “9-1-1 Lone Star” Was Canceled After 5 Seasons: 'Nobody Wants That' (Exclusive)

On Sept. 5, Fox announced that the Rob Lowe-led procedural will conclude following the upcoming fifth season

Gina Torres is saddened to say goodbye to 9-1-1: Lone Star.

While exclusively speaking to PEOPLE at Fox's fall press day, the actress, who plays paramedic captain Tommy Vega, reacted to the police procedural's cancellation after five seasons.

"Nobody wants that," she said of the show ending. "Nobody wants to hear that their show got canceled. It's sad. Nothing's going to last forever, but you just hope it lasts a little longer."

Though she'll no longer see the cast and other "great friends" she made on set everyday, Torres said she plans to "continue to see them, just not in the same capacity." The Suits alum added that she only has "good" memories from her time on 9-1-1: Lone Star.

"Everybody was just so lovely and so supportive and kind and really just to be their best in any given moment in time. So I take that with me," she added.

When asked about playing a strong female lead on the show, Torres called the opportunity to portray a "multifaceted" and "fully realized" character "such a blessing."

"We got to see her during times that were not necessarily at her best, which is also great," she said of Tommy. "She had lots to work through."

On Thursday, Sept. 5, Fox announced that the Rob Lowe-led procedural will conclude following the upcoming fifth season, which is set to premiere on Sept. 23.

In a statement, Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said that the final season will give the show the "high-stakes send-off it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable odds and relatable personal struggles, thanks to our incomparable, stellar cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres."

He also thanked the show's creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, calling them "one of the greatest creative teams in all of television" as he credited them with "creating one of the most action-packed dramas anywhere."

Later the same day, Fox dropped a new trailer for the upcoming season. As shots of explosions and action packed pursuits flash on screen, the cast gave fans insight into what they can expect in the final installment of 9-1-1:Lone Star.

"Season five begins with a massive train derailment," Lowe began before Torres added, "It is one of the most impressive onset experiences that I have had in quite some time."

The cast teased the the "crazy" circumstances their characters find themselves in. Brian Michael Smith also said fans can expect to see the beloved characters "getting blown up [and] flying through the air."

"We thought it was just going to be about the train wreck but the danger continues," Torres recalled, adding, "There's a gas cloud."

As the trailer played clips of Station 126 dealing with what they essentially describe as a "poisonous cloud of death," Ronen Rubinstein called the upcoming season a "perfect combination of extreme rescues and extreme dramatic storylines."

"It really leaves you guessing on what might happen next," Lowe mused. "I think people are going to love it."

The final season of 9-1-1: Lone Star premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
