A 12-year-old girl was found unresponsive in a bedroom by her grandfather the day before she died, the opening of an inquest has been told.

Mia-Mai Grace Williams of Aeron Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil, was visiting his home in the Penbryn area of the town on the evening of Saturday, 10 August when police were called to a medical episode.

She was taken to hospital, but died the following day, and the cause of her death is pending further investigation, Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard.

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Rhydywaun in Penywaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf, where Mia-Mai was a Year 7 pupil, reopened during the summer holidays for two days to offer support and counselling to her classmates.

The assistant coroner Rachel Knight adjourned the inquest to a later date and expressed her condolences to Mia-Mai's family.

In a previous statement, South Wales Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
