2024 Granite State Fair in Rochester

The Granite State Fair in Rochester is a tradition that goes back to the 1800s.

What: The Granite State Fair, originally known as the Rochester Fair, began in the 1800s, primarily to showcase mechanical and agricultural displays. It features a midway offering rides, food, games and entertainment, including Circus Hollywood, a cornhole tournament, and probably most famous, the school bus demolition derby.

When: Thursday-Sunday for two consecutive weeks: Sept. 12-15 and Sept. 19-22. Thursdays and Fridays, the fair and midway open at 4 p.m.; and on Saturday and Sundays the fair opens at 10 a.m. and the midway at noon.

Where: Rochester Fairgrounds, 77 Lafayette St., Rochester

Cost: $12 per person. Children age 8 and under are admitted free. On Thursday, Sept. 19, senior day, people 65 and over will be admitted to the fair for $5.

Star Island Open House

What: The day starts when you board the M/V Thomas Laighton in Portsmouth, around 12:30 p.m. Traveling down the Piscataqua River, you’ll be treated to a history tour and views of the Seacoast. Once on Star Island, go to the Front Lawn for refreshments while a flotilla of kites flies overhead. The afternoon holds many options.

Cost: $50 per person 18 years and older. Tickets are free for anyone under 18.
