The Great British Bake Off series 14 spoilers follow.

The Great British Bake Off has crowned Matty its 2023 winner following a tense final.

Arguably the dark horse of the show, PE teacher Matty beat fellow finalists Dan and Josh to win the show after impressing judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with his wonky three-tiered cake.

Following the last Showstopper challenge of the series, in which bakers were tasked with creating a cake celebrating their first-ever bakes, Matty was announced as the winner of series 14.

"I don't know what to say," a tearful Matty said. "People said, 'You should go on Bake Off', and I just thought it was a throwaway comment, I never really listened to it, I never thought I would be on this let alone win it."

Matty then thanked his girlfriend Lara for applying on his behalf.

Before the big win was announced, the finale began with the Signature challenge, where the bakers had to produce eight highly decorative eclairs. Josh wowed the judges with his chocolate-filled choux pastry buns, and Prue called Matty's banana eclairs "perfect", but Dan's messy eclairs failed to impress.

For the Technical challenge, Paul tasked the finalists with making a lardy cake. Josh came in first place, while Matty finished last with his under-baked cake.

After the Showstopper, Paul described Dan's tiered cake as "flawed", and Prue called Matty's leaning cake "absolutely delicious". Of Josh's cake, Paul said: "'Boring' is too strong a word, but it's on its way."

The Great British Bake Off and its spin-off Bake Off: An Extra Slice both air on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show and streams on Netflix.
