Halle Berry opens up about leaving Ryan Murphy drama starring Kim Kardashian: 'Things happen for a reason'

"All's Fair" is also set to feature Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Naomi Watts.

Halle Berry is breaking her silence on her exit from All's Fair, the buzzy legal drama hailing from Ryan Murphy and set to star Kim Kardashian.

While walking the red carpet for her new movie The Union, the Oscar-winning actress was asked about her departure from the series and told Entertainment Tonight, "Things happen for a reason."

Berry was previously attached to star in and produce the Hulu project, which centers on an all-female law firm. "I would've loved to have been there with those ladies," she said. "I know it's going to be great. [It's] Ryan Murphy! I mean, duh. But next time."

Word of Berry's exit came last month and was reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. Prior to that, she, Kardashian, and Glenn Close had been on board as the lead stars of All's Fair, with Kardashian set to play a top divorce lawyer. Further plot and character details have been kept under wraps. The show's ensemble cast is also set to include Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Naomi Watts.

While Berry's early screen credits were often in television, All's Fair would have marked a rare recent TV role for her. Outside of her '90s roles on such shows as A Different World and Knot's Landing, Berry led the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series Extant back in 2013 but hasn't made her way back to narrative TV since that show's 2015 cancellation.

In addition to The Union, which costars Mark Wahlberg, Berry currently has the horror film Never Let Go coming up.

During her red carpet chat, Berry also discussed her 58th birthday, which arrives Wednesday. "Never felt better," she said. "I feel great."

As far as birthday presents go, the Catwoman star joked that her long-term boyfriend, Van Hunt, has already "got my list,"  and she expressed gratitude for Wahlberg, who surprised her by sending his burger food truck to her house.

"I take that as an early birthday present," she said. "I was just teasing him, saying, 'I want the truck to come to my house,' and he actually did it. So he's a man of his word."
