A 10-year-old girl died after a fire started at the foot of her bed in her home in Bradford, an inquest heard.

The inquest into the "very sad death" of Eliza Bashir on 5 May was opened at Bradford Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

The court heard that a fire had started "at the foot of Eliza's bed" at the property in Kingsdale Drive, and that "she unfortunately could not be rescued".

A preliminary cause of death was read out in court as carbon monoxide toxification and inhalation of fire gases.

Assistant Coroner Caroline Chandler adjourned the inquest into Eliza's death, which is set to conclude on 19 November.

Following the fire, West Yorkshire Police reported that a woman, 37, and three children aged two, six and 11 had managed to escape the property and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Det Ch Insp Zaheer Abbas said: "This is an absolutely tragic incident in which a young child has lost her life, our thoughts are with her family at this time.

"Our investigation with the fire service has deemed that the fire was not suspicious."
