Huron, Flat Rock work hard for Huron League volleyball wins

NEWPORT – New Boston Huron topped Jefferson in three sets Wednesday in a Huron League volleyball match, but it didn’t seem like a three setter.

Every point was a battle before Huron pulled out a 27-25, 25-22, 25-23 victory.

“We played really good volleyball tonight,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “I’m proud of the girls. They all worked hard. Even the girls that came off the bench worked hard on that court. We have to find a way to finish though.”

Annie Boggs led the Bear hitters with six kills and Gracie Jones had five. Lindsey Gennoe was credited with 14 assists and three kills and Jenna Flint contributed eight assists and three kills.

Rams win marathon

FLAT ROCK – Flat Rock won the two sets, then had to fight back to pull out victory over Airport in the fifth set 25-20, 25-18, 12-25, 18-25, 16-14 Wednesday.

Sarah Giroux accumulated 23 kills and 10 digs for the winners while Hannah Hesse finished with 33 assists and 9 digs.

Maddie Stager (7 kills, 2 aces), Maelie Fricke (21 digs, 3 aces) and Reagan Higdon (8 kills 9 digs 3 aces) also played well.

“It was a very big win for us tonight,” Flat Rock coach Mackenzie Kaiser said. “We’ve been battling some downfalls and injuries all season and tonight our bad luck continued but we persevered.

I am very proud of how this team stepped up, Reagan Higdon had a great game all around but especially in set 5 she stepped up and put the ball down when we needed her.”

Joelle Shrewsbury (41 assists, 10 digs, 5 kills), Peyton Zajac (17 digs, 8 kills), Renee Shrewsbury (17 kills, 9 digs) and Jillian Baker (8 kills, 4 digs) led 11-5-1 Airport.

Wourman gets Milan started

GROSSE ILE – Malea Wourman had a kill to begin each set as Milan dispatched Grosse Ile 25-11, 25-18, 25-13 Wednesday night.

“The girls played well and we had every player on the team contribute tonight,” Milan coach Makenna Slack said. “We thrive off of our energy and team chemistry. The girls displayed that tonight.”

Aubree Higgins and Laila Frye also had big moments for 8-1 Milan.

Milan charges back

MILAN – Milan charged back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie with Grosse Ile Wednesday.

“It was a huge rivalry match,” Milan coach Phil Hayes said. “Both teams came out strong. Our boys played phenomenal after being down early. They made the proper adjustments.”

Caiden Lambers and Caleb Klein scored for the 6-2-2 Big Reds.

Huron grounds Jets

NEW BOSTON – Ian Petrick had another big game as New Boston Huron stopped Airport 6-0 Wednesday.

“They’re a good team,” said Airport coach Nick Saurez, whose team fell to 10-5.

Flat Rock blanked

FLAT ROCK – Riverview handed Flat Rock a 7-0 loss Wednesday.

PREP GOLF

Kinsey, Paolino tie on top

MONROE – Nora Kinsey and Meadow Paolino tied for medalist honors at 44 during St. Mary Catholic Central’s 186-233 win over Flat Rock Wednesday at Monroe Golf & Country Club.

Alaina Wille (48) and Tori Busen (50) completed the top four for the Kestrels.

Carlson ties for second

RIVERVIEW – Gibraltar Carlson shot a round of 192 to tie Allen Park for second place behind Woodhaven’s winning score of 160 in a Downriver League quad at Riverview Highlands Wednesday.

Wyandotte Roosevelt was fourth with 226.

Andria Konczal led the Marauders with 42, Madilyn Peterson shot 47 and Ella Atkinson added a 50.

Chrissy Cumbo paced Flat Rock with 52 while Emma Neace carded a 55 and Elyse Rogier a 56.

Hackette low for Bedford

GRASS LAKE – Natalie Hackette shot 97 as Bedford placed seventh Wednesday in the East Jackson invite held at Calderone Golf Club.

Kennedy Nadolny shot 105 for the Mules.
