Hurricane Debby may bring heavy rain, storms in Poughkeepsie, Middletown this week

For the first half of the summer, the mid-Hudson Valley did not see much rain, but that may be changing. The forecast predicts another week of rainy days for the Poughkeepsie and Middletown areas.

According to meteorologist Tom Wasula of the National Weather Service Albany Office, and lead meteorologist John Cristantello of the National Weather Service New York Office, there may be some spots of relief from the showers Wednesday, but most of this week will include cloudy skies.

Hurricane Debby, a tropical storm hitting the southern states, may affect the weather forecast for this week. To stay up to date on the weather for this week, see the National Weather Service's website at weather.gov.

Forecast for Poughkeepsie: Aug. 6-9, plus weekend brief

In the Poughkeepsie area on Tuesday, there is a chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with the highs around 80 degrees. Wasula said there is a chance of thunderstorms earlier Tuesday night as well, but there may be a slight drop in the humidity for Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Wednesday, Wasula noted, could bring a bit of a break from the rain and the oppressive heat, with the high temperature forecasted in the mid-70s. "We start out with a chance of showers, but then things could improve in the afternoon," he said.

Moving later into the week, Thursday afternoon and evening, the chance of showers returns, with highs in the upper 70s again. Showers are likely for the night too.

"The wettest part of the forecast looks like in that late Thursday night into Saturday portion," Wasula said.

The amount of rainfall is uncertain, due to tropical storm Debby, but Wasula predicted some periods of moderate to heavy rainfall look possible.

He noted it's predicted to be cooler Friday, with highs in the lower 70s, but again, the chance for rain persists at about 70%. Similar outlooks for rain are predicted for Saturday at 60%, but the high is 80 degrees.

It is still early to be certain, but Sunday looks to be the better day this weekend, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 81 degrees.

Forecast for Middletown: Aug. 6-9, plus weekend brief

For Tuesday in the Middletown area, Cristantello said the cold front "sagging down" will most likely bring a couple of showers and maybe scattered thunderstorms, with chances increasing from the afternoon into the night. He doesn't think it'll be a steady rain, but showers will most likely be more numerous around the area. The high temperature is predicted at 79 degrees.

As well, "Tuesday through the rest of the week could start to feel quite muggy," he said.

Cristantello noted tropical storm Debby too, which may affect the forecast for later this week. As of now, Wednesday looks to give some relief from the rain and humidity in the afternoon, with high temperatures in the low 70s, but you may see some showers in the morning.

The dry period from Wednesday afternoon may extend into Thursday, "but you can't rely on anything," he said. The residual impacts from the tropical system may change their predictions as the week progresses.

Chances for rain go up again on Friday and into the weekend for Middletown, with the temperatures topping out in the low 70s on Friday.

Similar to the Poughkeepsie area, Sunday in the Middletown area looks to be the mildest, with mostly sunny weather and a high temperature near 79 degrees.
