Jenny Slate embraced motherhood in 2021 with the birth of her daughter, Ida Lupine Shattuck

Jenny Slate’s sense of humor is central to her career, and she carries it into motherhood while raising her daughter, Ida Lupine Shattuck.

Slate and her husband, Ben Shattuck, welcomed their first child in February 2021, but the announcement of her birth came as a surprise to many because the actress revealed her pregnancy less than two months before her due date.

During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers in December 2020, the Parks and Recreation star stood up to show her baby bump and said, "How have the exact last nine months been? They've been real pregnant for me."

Slate, who stars in the film adaptation of Colleen Hover’s It Ends With Us, has had a busy few years. Still, she has been bonding with her daughter behind the scenes and has spoken about how becoming a mom has been the most significant experience of her life thus far.

"I can say, without a doubt, that motherhood is for sure the most meaningful thing that has ever happened to me," the actress told Entertainment Tonight in February 2021. "I feel really lucky and happy."

She was born in 2021

Slate and Shattuck welcomed their first child, daughter Ida Lupine, on Feb. 3, 2021.

While announcing Ida’s birth, Slate told Entertainment Tonight that her newborn was "a sweet, happy baby" and a "good sleeper."

Her arrival came about six weeks after the comedian shared that she was expecting during a December 2020 interview with Meyers.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions at the time, Slate appeared on the show virtually, where her pregnancy could have continued to remain hidden. However, the Kroll Show star decided to make light of the lockdown bread-baking craze as a way to reveal the news.

"I hunkered down and baked a lot of bread, but I just wanna say I might have baked too much bread or eaten too much bread — you tell me," she said, standing up from her chair to show her bump.

The Bob's Burgers voice actress added that although the pregnancy happened amid unprecedented times, it was "nice to have a little secret treasure" and “something that is incredibly positive during a time that's hard and sad."

Her birth brought her parents even closer

Since Ida was born amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Slate’s experience was unconventional — like many mothers who gave birth during lockdown.

"It's like, 'Wow, we're really doing this,’ ” she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February 2021. “[Ben] was allowed in. We weren't sure how it was gonna go, and we had our masks on and everything.”

Despite the extra precautions, the Big Mouth star told Entertainment Tonight that it was a positive experience and "strangely rather romantic" as she and Shattuck were exceptionally present in the moment.

Slate, who has been married to Shattuck since 2022, said they bonded more throughout her pregnancy.

"He was so sweet and supportive toward me,” she explained to ET. “We are already very, very close, but I guess you can get closer and closer when your love is healthy and good."

She is named after Slate and Shattuck’s favorite flower

Slate shared with Entertainment Tonight that she and Shattuck chose Ida because they "loved the name," and Lupine is one of their favorite flowers.

However, there were other contenders. While talking with Kimmel, Slate explained how she and her husband researched their heritages and discovered an area in Europe that her family is from.

"We were looking at some Eastern European names, and we didn't go with this," Slate said. "But one name that we were both obsessed with was spelled b-a-g-r-a-t. And while I was pregnant, we just kept calling her Bagrat, which I'm sure is not how to pronounce that."

She helped Slate rethink her everyday routines

In May 2022, Slate told E! News how daily rituals are a big part of her life, and becoming a mother changed her routine, ultimately making her more consistent with an added layer of accountability.

“It's just really nice to see this version of myself because I think I'm one that will skimp on my own daily stuff if I feel like there's just not enough time for it,” she said.

Still, the Everything Everywhere All at Once alum has a distinct mindset when it comes to Ida. "I do bath time and stories and bottle and singing every night," Slate explained. "I put my daughter to sleep every night, and I just love it. I love that she expects that, and she knows that I'll be there."

She added that while having a child has put her on a "very different schedule," she’s welcomed the change of pace.

“I'm sure it will change, obviously, when I go back and make the next movie,” the comedian said. “But that tenderness in that routine, I just love it so much.”

She has a “silly mom”

Slate’s playful and comedic nature shines through in nearly all of her work as an actress, comedian and writer — and her parenting style is no exception.

“I also am a silly mom. I guess that's to be expected, but there's a lot of dancing going on," she shared with E! News.

The Great North star added that she values how her behavior will set a tone for Ida's perception of parenthood.

"I like that she'll come to think that it's normal that moms are wacky and loud and make funny noises,” Slate said. “I think that's really important."
