John Legend goes full ‘dad mode’ in video protecting daughter from future suitors

John Legend wrote his daughter an entire album, so your son won't.

The “All of You” singer posted a hilarious video Sept. 4 taking his 1-year-old daughter, Esti Maxine, into his arms and sharing the inspiration behind his new children’s songs.

“Recorded an entire album for my baby girl so she won’t be impressed by your son playing a G chord on guitar,” Legend wrote over the video.

In the clip, he picks up Esti, gives her a kiss, then gives a smug look to the camera as “Toxic” by RealestK plays in the background.

“Dad mode activated,” he captioned the video, tagging NFL player Isaac Christopher Rochell with the handhold emoji.

Chrissy Teigen, Legend’s wife, commented on the post, joking, “u really did this trend oh my god. I’m leaving. u can have custody.”

The couple share four children, all with Legend's real last name, Stephens: Luna Simone, 8, Miles Theodore, 6, Esti Maxine, 1, and Wren Alexander, 1.

Rochell has been known to make similar videos with his own daughter, capitalizing on the trend of not letting their little girls be wooed by “dusty” men one day.

In a July 31 post, Rochell shared a video holding his daughter picking out clothes and wrote, “I give my daughter a $5k a week budget to spend on clothes so she won’t be impressed by your dusty son talking about ‘I’ll take you to the mall and buy you anything.’”

Deeming himself a “#girldad,” Rochell also shared a video July 22 holding his daughter while he stirs food in a pot. He wrote over the clip, “I cook with my daughter every single night so she’s not impressed by your talking about ‘come over...I’ll cook you anything you want.’”

While appearing on TODAY with Hoda and Jenna Sept. 5, Legend discussed his new album, “My Favorite Dream,” which is a collaboration with Fisher-Price.

“I wouldn’t have made this album if I wasn’t in the thick of fatherhood,” Legend told co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager.

“It started with listening to the Fisher-Price little Kick & Play mat that was playing one of the songs that Esti really loves,” he continued.

Legend explained that Teigen then suggested he learn their daughter's favorite song so he could sing it to her.

“So, I learned (the song) on a regular piano and Chrissy posted on her Instagram,” Legend said. “And people were like, ‘John, you got to do more of these songs.’ And I was like, ‘You know what, let’s try it.’”

“I decided to write a whole album of sing-a-longs and lullabies for kids and their families,” he added.
