One of John Lennon's sons sent a scathing message to Prince Harry about Spare, the memoir that the Duke of Sussex published in early 2023.
Sean Lennon, the late Beatles musician’s younger son at 48, shared his opinion about the memoir in a brief post on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday, May 29.
Sean’s tongue-in-cheek review began with an acknowledgment that he was sharing his thoughts a bit late, given that Harry’s memoir was released more than one year ago.
“My long awaited review of Prince Harry’s autobiography is two words,” Sean’s tweet began. He then typed out his thoughts succinctly: “’Spare Me.’”

In the hours that followed his tweet, Sean responded to fellow social media users who criticized his view of the book. On Thursday., May 30, he tweeted, “People are coming after me because I made a joke about the title of Harry’s book. It’s pretty great.”
In one exchange with a social media user, Sean wrote that he does “empathize” with Prince Harry “generally,” but “the way he whines and wangs on about things is really too much. I’m just having a little fun. I think he’s earned some mockery. (I’m sure I have as well).”
Later, Sean referenced that tweet while criticizing an article covering his comments, writing, “Interesting the Daily Mail chose not to mention me saying that I am sure I have earned some mockery as well. The media always pick and choose to suit their narrative.”
Penguin Random House, the publisher of Spare, said of Harry’s memoir on its website that it was “the first time” that the prince told his story “with raw, unflinching honesty.” The 416-page book chronicled Harry’s life from his early memories through his marriage with Meghan Markle and the births of their two young children. The publisher described the memoir as being “full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
Though the memoir broke sales records at the time of its release, it drew mixed reviews from critics, with one BBC writer calling it the “weirdest book ever written by a royal.” Even so, many curious royal watchers raced through its pages in the hopes of learning more about ongoing tensions between Harry and other members of the royal family.
