Join us for the Idaho Statesman‘s Proposition 1 debate at Boise State

The Idaho Statesman, in partnership with Boise State’s Institute for Advancing American Values, will host a debate on Proposition 1, the citizens initiative on the November ballot that would dramatically change how we select our elected officials.

We are offering this community debate to inform you of this important issue. Join us at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Boise State Interactive Learning Center, 2120 W. University Drive, Room 118. This event is free. Click the link above in this article to register, or if you’re on the Idaho Statesman app, click here to guarantee a seat.

Proposition 1, also known as the open primaries initiative, if passed by a majority of voters on Nov. 5, would change how Idaho elections are run.

  • It would create a multi-party open primary in which the top four vote-getters would advance to the general election.

  • Then, in the general election, voters would rank all four candidates based on preference, otherwise known as ranked choice voting.

The candidate with the lowest vote count would be eliminated. Their vote would go to the voter’s next-highest choice. The process would be repeated until two candidates remain. The candidate with the most votes wins.

This debate will be like the Munk Debates, a traditional debate format with arguments for and against and rebuttals.

We also plan to take a poll at the beginning of the debate and after so you can let us know if you change your opinion.

Luke Mayville, spokesperson for Idahoans for Open Primaries, will debate in favor of the initiative. Trent England of Oklahoma-based Save Our States will debate against the initiative.
