Jon Stewart lands a blow for cats in “The Daily Show”'s DNC wrap-up

During the satirical news show, which aired live from Chicago, Stewart referenced 'childless cat ladies' and Catturd.

Cats were a theme in Jon Stewart's Democratic National Convention wrap-up edition of The Daily Show, which aired live from Chicago.

Stewart talked about Oprah Winfrey standing up for American kittyzens on Wednesday night, as well as the camera panning to one woman in the audience when Winfrey said the words "childless cat lady."

And he compared Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to Catturd — a right-wing personality on X (formerly Twitter) who has previously been name-dropped on TV. Catturd (real name Phillip Buchanan) is popular among the MAGA crowd and counts Trump as one of his fans; he even shared a hand-written letter from the former president after a hospital stay in 2022.

Moments after Vice President Kamala Harris accepted her party's nomination, Stewart dug into Trump's social media reactions to Harris' closing night speech.

"If I was Donald Trump right now, I'd probably just be tweeting nonsensical s--- to distract from the fact she doesn’t faintly resemble the caricature that's been painted," Stewart said. "By the way, that is what he’s doing.”

Harris had shown herself to be an actual person, Stewart said, rather than as Trump has depicted her at his rallies.

Several of Trump's Truth Social posts then appeared on screen, including "Walz was an ASSISTANT Coach, not a COACH," "Too many 'Thank yous,' too rapidly said, what's going on with her?," "IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?," and "WHERE'S HUNTER?"

Stewart then dealt a final blow to the former president. With his social media rants, the host said, Trump has "morphed into a poor man’s Catturd."

Later in the episode, Stewart called out the camera operators at the DNC.

"The Democrats were hitting all the right notes," he said. "The cameraman? Not so much."

He then played clips from Winfrey's speech on Wednesday night.

"When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion. We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can to save them," Winfrey said. "And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady? We try to get that cat out, too."

After Winfrey said "childless cat lady," the audience cheered and the camera panned to a woman.

"I love that the camera just stayed on her," Stewart said, going on to note that the woman, Teresa Woorman, was interviewed after the viral moment and revealed she did indeed have two rescue cats (named Snow White and Oscar) and no children.

Woorman, a Maryland delegate, has since embraced the connection to the term and tweeted that she is "is 100% disgusted by J.D. Vance in general," while adding that she "may be childless but I do hope that’s not a permanent condition, thanks!"

U.S. Sen. Vance, Trump's VP running mate, started this cat fight. Recently resurfaced comments Vance made about "childless cat ladies" supposedly spreading misery across America have been the subject of much criticism and derision — especially after Vance appeared to double-down on his 2021 statements. The comments evoked passionate responses, including those from Hollywood stars Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg, as well as Glenn Close, who appeared in the film adaptation of Vance's memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. (Vance has said it was a sarcastic comment.)

The live episode later continued to celebrate Harris in the latest installment in its Convention Films series, “Kamala Harris – Just Normal."

After depicting bizarre moments in the campaigns of Trump and outgoing President Joe Biden, Ozark actor Jason Bateman, who served as the narrator, noted that after that and "just generally feeling like were trapped in a sadistic circus in the eighth circle of hell, it is time for America to return to normal. It is time for Kamala Harris. Just normal."

Stewart is scheduled to return to the show periodically leading up to the election Nov. 5.
