July full moon coming; get ready for the buck moon

July’s full moon is coming up.

Here’s everything you need to know about seeing the buck moon.

What is the buck moon?

The buck moon is the name given to the full moon in July and originates from Native American traditions surrounding hunting for game.

This is the time of year that male deer — bucks — start to grow their new antlers.

When is the buck moon?

The buck moon usually occurs in mid to late July. In 2024, it will reach its peak fullness on the night of July 21.

If you can't get out to see it on that night, don’t worry. The buck moon will be nearly full for a few days before and after the peak. You can still enjoy a great view from July 19 through July 23.

During those nights, the moon will still appear almost entirely lit.
