“Jurassic World Rebirth” first look reveals Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey searching for 'massive dinosaurs'

Universal unveiled new plot details and character descriptions for the upcoming sequel, also starring Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend.

The future of the Jurassic Park franchise is rooted in a massive blast from the past, as new plot details for the next movie, officially titled Jurassic World Rebirth, tease a dangerous journey fronted by new series stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali.

Universal announced Thursday the film's new title as well as confirmed plot details, character descriptions, and a release date for the upcoming movie, which will mark the first Jurassic series entry since 2022's Jurassic World Dominion.

According to the studio, director Gareth Edwards' blockbuster stars Johansson as covert operations expert Zora Bennett, who's contracted to front a team on a secret mission to obtain genetic material from the three biggest dinosaurs on earth. Bennett's mission comes five years after the global dinosaur domination last seen in Dominion, with the planet's ecology now proving to be inhospitable to the dinosaurs that escaped confinement in 2018's Fallen Kingdom (and who were previously kept in the titular World park in the 2015 franchise revival).

Now Bennett's team travels to one of the last remaining bastions for dinosaurs in an equatorial environment where the trio of dinos holds a genetic key to a drug that could hold life-saving benefits for all of mankind. Bennett's operation unexpectedly intersects with a civilian family whose boat tour was capsized by aquatic dinosaurs, and the new group ultimately finds themselves stranded on an island where they must confront a "sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades," per the synopsis.

Two-time Oscar-winning actor Ali plays Bennett's team leader, Duncan Kincaid, while Emmy nominee Bailey co-stars as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. Homeland alum Rupert Friend appears as pharmaceutical rep Martin Krebs, while Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer) portrays Reuben Delgado, the patriarch of the civilian family Bennett's crew encounters in the wild.

First-look photos from the movie see Johansson and Bailey laying low in a field of tall vegetation as well as Ali screaming at an unseen threat while holding a burning flare.

Other cast members in Jurassic World Rebirth include Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) as members of the Delgado family; with Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool) rounding out members of Bennett's team.

In addition to the aforementioned cast and crew, original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp wrote the film's script, with longtime series producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley both returning to produce alongside the 1993 film's director, Steven Spielberg, who will executive produce the project with Denis L. Stewart and Jim Spencer. All of the series' projects are based on the 1990 novel written by late author Michael Crichton.

Oscar nominee Johansson earlier revealed in a recent Comicbook.com interview that she was excited to join the $6 billion monolithic franchise for its upcoming installment.

“I’ve been trying to get into this franchise in any possible way for over 10 years,” Johansson explained. “I’m like, 'I'll die in the first five minutes! I can get eaten by whatever! I'll do the craft service!' I'll do anything for it. The fact that it's happened in this way, at this time, just is actually unbelievable. I can't believe it."
