Kamala Harris to meet Sunday with Kelly, Shapiro, Walz as final VP decision nears: reports

Updated

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with at least three finalists Sunday to serve as her running-mate as she nears the end of a rapid process to choose her vice president before an announcement comes imminently, according to multiple reports.

Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, will meet with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., at the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, the Washington Post first reported, citing people familiar with the meetings.

It was unclear whether Harris planned to meet with additional vice presidential candidates Sunday or if she already had one-on-one interview with others. An unnamed source described the interviews as a "chemistry test" to the New York Times.

The Harris campaign would not comment on the reports.

Others in the mix have included Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

The law firm of former Attorney General Eric Holder has been leading the vetting process. Holder was with Harris at the Naval Observatory residence on Saturday.

A decision on Harris' vice presidential nominee will come no later than Tuesday, when Harris goes to Philadelphia to hold a campaign rally with her pick to kick off a multi-state battleground blitz.

The Harris campaign plans to notify supporters by text message − the same way President Joe Biden informed the public about his pick of Harris as his running-mate four years ago.

"Kamala Harris is picking her running mate any day now! This moment is historic, and as one of our campaign’s most faithful supporters, we want you to play a special part in it," the campaign said in a sign-up sheet to get on the text-message list. "Add your name to be among the first to learn about Kamala’s VP pick when we break the news."
