This new Kansas City restaurant will serve ‘Hot Mama’ chicken, lobster rolls, more

George Atsangbe has spent nearly four decades working at several restaurant companies. Now he’s going out on his own with an eatery serving “all-American cuisine and 50% seafood.”

Union on the Hill was scheduled to open for dinner at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 2976 Gillham Road. Lunch service was set to start Wednesday.

Atsangbe earned a bachelor of arts in international relations from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Then he joined Houlihan’s in 1984 and has since had stints with locally owned restaurant companies Bread & Butter Concepts and KC Hopps — director of research and development, director of culinary, menu consulting and more. He also owns and operates The Happy Belly food truck.

“After you have done all parts of the restaurant business this is exciting,” he said. “Because of my vast experience it was hard to cut the menu down. It kept getting bigger. The most difficult part is to take things off.”

The menu includes quinoa burgers, brisket burgers, mahimahi sandwiches, hanger steak, filet meatloaf, lobster rolls, tacos, artichoke carbonara, salads, soup of the day, Hot Mama chicken sandwiches with garlic aioli and butter hot sauce, flatbreads and wings with a spicy garlic aioli. Sides will include roasted cauliflower, spaghetti squash and macaroni and cheese with burnt ends and five cheeses.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. He plans to add weekend brunch in late January.

Oh! Cafe Union Hill and Cafe Europa had previously operated in the space.
