Kate Middleton Releases Major Health Update and Announces Next Appearance

In the days leading up to this year’s Trooping the Colour (which is taking place tomorrow), questions surrounding Kate Middleton's involvement in the annual celebration have been at an all-time high. After undergoing an unannounced abdominal surgery earlier this year and then revealing her cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt video shared on social media in March, the mother of three has been notably absent from the public eye. Now that the big day has nearly arrived, royally-obsessed fans finally have an answer thanks to a major announcement from the princess herself.

Today, Middleton gave a health update and revealed she will be in attendance at Trooping the Colour. Along with a new photo, the princess wrote on Instagram, “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.”

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

She continued, “My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”

“I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet. I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal. Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.” She signed the message, “C.”

Royal fans were uncertain about Princess Catherine’s participation in this year’s festivities due to her health issues and because the 42-year-old royal was not a part of the dress rehearsal for Trooping the Colour on June 8, which is also referred to as the Colonel’s Review.

Following her absence, the Princess of Wales (who is also the honorary colonel of the Irish Guards) wrote a thoughtful apology to the Irish Guards, which was shared on their official X (formerly known as Twitter) page.

“I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel's Review and Trooping of the Colour. I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practicing for months, and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drill are immaculate,” she wrote.

During 2023’s Trooping the Colour, Princess Catherine rode with her three children—Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 6—in a carriage and also participated in the iconic “Balcony photo.” According to Harper’s BAZAAR, Catherine’s green monochromatic outfit not only paid homage to the Irish Guards, but it also served as a subtle nod to the color’s use in the flag of Wales.

Per the official royal family website, Trooping the Colour is a ceremonial event that is the official birthday of the British sovereign. (Fun fact: It is also referred to as the Sovereign’s Birthday Parade.) Every year, over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, 400 musicians and (of course) members of the British royal family come together to mark the occasion.

Tomorrow is sure to be a day to remember.
