Kentucky high school sports spring standouts: Meet top 5 boys from Louisville area

With all spring sports now complete, it’s time to look back at some of the top boys athletes from the Louisville area.

Listed below are five standouts from the 2024 season. Players from the following counties were eligible: Bullitt, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby and Spencer.

Kaine Samuels, Ballard, baseball

Junior pitcher/first baseman Kaine Samuels was 9-1 with one save, a 1.75 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 67 ⅓ innings. He batted .439 with five home runs, 11 doubles, 36 RBIs and 30 runs scored. Samuels, who has committed to Western Kentucky University, was named Seventh Region Player of the Year and first-team All-State.

Brayden Bruner, Pleasure Ridge Park, baseball

Junior center fielder Brayden Bruner batted .400 with four home runs, nine doubles, nine triples, 46 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 33 stolen bases while helping the Panthers win their seventh state championship. Bruner was named Sixth Region Player of the Year and first-team All-State.

Adrian Johnson, Central, track and field

Senior Adrian Johnson won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at the Class 3A Track and Field Championships at the University of Kentucky. In the 2024 outdoor season, Johnson did not lose in the 300 hurdles; the lowest he placed in the 110 hurdles was second.

Hank Scherer, Trinity, track and field

Junior sprinter Hank Scherer competed in his first state track meet this spring. He won the 100 meters, finished second in the 200 and was part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that placed first in the state.

Oliver Veliquette, Collegiate, track and field

Reigning Class A 300-meter hurdles champion Oliver Veliquette recorded personal-best times in the Clark’s Pump-n-Shop Class A Track and Field State Championships 110- and 300-meter hurdles on his way to first-place finishes in both events.
