Kevin Costner Hinted That 'Yellowstone' May "Circle Back" to Him

While the hit Western Yellowstone has always had a few secrets simmering below the surface, in recent months fans have had to develop a knack for reading between the lines as the scuttlebutt about the series and its future seems to change weekly. In the latest turn, Kevin Costner, who starred on the show for its first four and a half seasons, has hinted that despite confirming that he will not be returning for season 5B in November, he hasn't ruled the ranching drama out entirely.

Speaking with ET, the actor called the show “a wonderful part of my life,” adding, “Who knows, some things have a way of circling back. I haven’t seen that dust trail coming toward me, but I’ve always been open to what I started. Five seasons was a lot for us to do, and I think that story is not finished.”

Costner further opined in the interview that the series could carry on through the children of his character, John Dutton. "Make the story about them,” he said.

The statements would seem to indicate that Costner has no immediate plans to return to the series personally, but could appear onscreen as the enigmatic Dutton patriarch somewhere down the road.

It's been a long and mercurial journey for fans who had hoped to see John Dutton return to the small screen. Costner first announced that he would be exiting the flagship Yellowstone series back in the spring of 2023, following months of rumors about behind-the-scenes tensions and scheduling conflicts. At the time, it wasn't clear whether the star would finish out the second half of the fifth season, then scheduled to debut last fall, before making his exit, or if the season's first half would be all we would see of John. The will-he-won't-he continued for over a year, with statements at various times indicating he was unlikely to return, before Costner officially bowed out of the series in a social media post this June.

Nonetheless, Costner has consistently indicated he'd be willing to return to the character, "under the right circumstances," as he told Today while promoting his film Horizon: An American Saga, so there may still be hope to one day see more of his land-loving rancher.

Costner's involvement has been far from the only back and forth for Yellowstone fans recently—in the past few weeks it has variously been revealed that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who star as Beth and Rip on the series, are in talks to revive the show for an unexpected sixth season, however comments from both actors and their co-stars have only muddied the waters as to whether or not the upcoming episodes will indeed be the show's last, as previously announced.
