Breeders leader Kim Deal has gone solo for the first time in a decade with her new 4AD single, “Coast,” which was recorded by the late Steve Albini at his Chicago-based studio Electrical Audio. As of now, there’s no word on whether “Coast” presages additional solo releases from Deal, whose last single under her own name was 2014’s “Biker Gone” b/w “Beautiful Moon Clear.”

The song was written in 2020 but draws inspiration from a 2000-era period when the normally Ohio-based Deal spent time on the island of Nantucket, Ma., during off season. Deal says she was further influenced by attending her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding and hearing the band, the Grape Whizzers, perform Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem.”

More from Spin:

“Coast” finds Deal backed by her twin sister and Breeders bandmate Kelley on guitar, former Breeders bassist Mando Lopez and drummer Lindsay Glover. Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza contributed horns.

Having already opened a handful of dates on Olivia Rodrigo’s North American arena tour in support of GUTS, the Breeders will resume those duties Aug. 13-14 and 16-17 at Kia Forum in Los Angeles. In an endlessly amusing factoid, their classic 1993 album Last Splash was released 10 years before Rodrigo was born.

Afterwards, the group will also play Sept. 21 at the Sing Out Loud festival in St. Augustine, Fl., and Sept. 29 at Eddie Vedder’s Ohana festival in Dana Point, Ca.
