On Sunday, King Charles III made his first public appearance since Buckingham Palace announced his cancer diagnosis.

The British monarch appeared to be in high spirits as he and Queen Consort Camilla strolled home from a service at St. Mary Magdalene Church near the Sandringham royal country house, where he is recovering after his first outpatient treatment in London. The king smiled and waved at a crowd of onlookers before being greeted by Reverend Dr. Paul Williams.

The outing came hours after the king broke his silence on the diagnosis, expressing his “most heartfelt thanks” for the public’s support in a statement released late Saturday.

“As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” he said. “It is equally heartening to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world. My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience.”

On Monday, the palace revealed doctors detected a “form of cancer” during an operation Charles underwent last month to treat a benign enlarged prostate. While the specific type of cancer has not been announced, Bazaar understands the diagnosis is not prostate cancer. The palace also stated the king will be opting out of several public engagements as he heals.

Camilla shared an update on her husband’s progress while attending a musical event at Salisbury Cathedral on Thursday. “Well he’s doing extremely well under the circumstances,’’ the queen said, according to NBC. “He’s very touched by all the letters and the messages the public have been sending from everywhere—that’s very cheering.”

Prince William, Princess Kate, and their three kids, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, are also in Sandringham. The family traveled to Norfolk on Friday to spend half term, which marked Kate’s first time leaving Windsor since her abdominal surgery.

Kensington Palace announced in a statement last month that Princess Kate was admitted to the hospital on January 16 for a planned abdominal operation. She returned to Adelaide Cottage to continue her recovery on January 29. While it’s unclear what led the princess to need surgery, Bazaar.com quickly learned her condition is not cancerous. She is unlikely to return to her royal engagements until after Easter, which falls on March 31 this year.

“Catherine is recovering well,” an exclusive source told the Daily Mail on Friday. “She was looking forward to a change of scene and will be able to take it easy in Norfolk while the children let off steam with William.”
