Labor Day weekend brings top sales, deals at major Texas retailers

While Labor Day is a time to honor the contributions of the American workforce, there are also some fun tidbits associated with the holiday — like that old wives' tale about not wearing white — and then, of course, there are the endless sales, especially when it comes to furniture.

Many also consider the holiday the end of summer, but does Labor Day mean the start of fall?

Always celebrated the first Monday in September, here are your questions answered about Labor Day:

What is Labor Day and why do we celebrate it?

Labor Day celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated with a parade on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. Nearly 25,000 union members and their families lined the streets of lower Manhattan near city hall.

Why aren't you supposed to wear white after Labor Day?

There are different theories about the so-called fashion rule.

For instance, the old wives' tale may have stemmed from simply being practical during the summer months, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Before air conditioning, white and light-weight clothing was popular during scorching summer heat, and then people switched to darker clothing in the winter.

Another belief is the rule is rooted in the wealthy, according to Vogue.

The affluent would leave sweltering cities in the summer and travel to cooler places by the ocean, often packing white attire in their suitcases.

They would return as the crisp, cool temperatures of fall arrived, packing away white linen suits and flowing summer dresses. Even more, places like New York had streets made of dirt and rotting garbage, which would show up easily in white clothing.

In modern days, Vogue says the rule shouldn't apply.

"We don’t live in the Gilded Age anymore. Our streets are paved. Our trash is taken out. You can wear white after Labor Day," the fashion magazine states.

Does Labor Day mark the end of summer?

While we may experience cooler mornings that signal the start of fall, Labor Day does not mean summer has ended. In fact, the first day of fall is marked by the autumnal equinox, happening on Sunday, Sept. 22, according to the National Weather Service.

Is there school on Labor Day 2024?

No, schools are closed on Labor Day, seeing it is a federal holiday.
