Many Savannah residents already thought Leopold's Ice Cream was among best if not the very best. But recently, USA Today validated that belief.

On Thursday, USAT's "Best Indie Ice Cream Shops Across the U.S." list was released and Leopold's ranked No. 4. It was the only Georgia shop to make the list and one of only a few in the south.

The top 10 were selected by a panel of experts and voted by readers as the best in the U.S. based on their use of quality, fresh ingredients, and creative takes on the iconic dessert. Here's what USA Today had to say about Leopold's:

Stranger things in Georgia: BabyLand in north Georgia grows the Cabbage Patch Kids

"The storied streets of Savannah are home to a wealth of vintage businesses, and Leopold's Ice Cream is no exception. Banana splits and hot fudge sundaes are just a few of the decadent desserts gracing the menu since 1919."

Leopold's posted a message on Facebook calling this a grand achievement and thanking everyone who made this happen.

"It would not be possible without each and every one of you who made this possible: Our guests, our creamery, our soda jerks in our shops, our delivery driver, our shipping team...All who have impacted Leopold's throughout the century," Leopold's wrote. "We should thank our entire team for their commitment to quality and unsurpassed customer service as well as our customers who cross our threshold, order online or purchase through our partners. Thank you so much for making sweet memories with us."

Here are the top three in USAT's list:

  1. An's Dry Cleaning in San Diego

  2. Coneflower Creameryin Omaha, NE

  3. Owowcow Creamery in New Jersey and Pennsylvania
