Tinted moisturizers are the original skincare-makeup hybrid products. With sheer to medium coverage, they're ideal for no-makeup-makeup days, especially when sunscreen is added to the mix.

While some foundations offer SPF too, they aren't one and the same. "A tinted moisturizer with SPF will have a sheer application that leaves skin visible, compared to a foundation with SPF, which has more pigment and, therefore, more coverage," explains celebrity makeup artist Sean Harris.

Can a tinted moisturizer with SPF replace your regular sunscreen?

We hate to break it to you, but "The short answer is no," says Harris. "You need to apply one-quarter of a teaspoon or about a nickel-sized amount of SPF on the face to get the advertised Sun Protection Factor. Therefore, I recommend applying a regular SPF prior to a tinted sunscreen or foundation."

So what's the point in applying tinted moisturizer with SPF, you ask? It doesn't hurt to have a little extra SPF oomph. Also, if you're running out the door and forget sunscreen, anything is better than nothing.
