Fabric Type

Outdoor performance fabrics, such as Sunbrella or Perennials, are essential. “Linen-look options and textural weaves are a great choice because they hide dirt better than a smooth, solid, flat fabric,” says Cervoni.

Scale

“Consider the size and scale of the sofa in relation to the outdoor space,” says Kerrie Kelly, NKBA, FASID, CEO and creative director of Kerrie Kelly Studio. “Scaling appropriately can create a more harmonious and inviting atmosphere.”

Profile

Big, broad, contemporary profiles are still in and great for a larger space, but retro designs are also back in the game with nods to midcentury modern and '70s Italian styling, says Cervoni. Curves are also big, reflecting the soft curves and rounded shapes showcased recently at Milan Design Week, says Kelly.

Texture

Wicker is in, with either a contemporary coastal feel or delicate and antique-y vibe, but it’s modernized with the cushion profile and color. “Most of these options are a poly-resin wicker which holds up much better than traditional wicker,” says Cervoni.
