Abandoned Dog in Recovery After Being 'Drenched' in Motor Oil and Left 'Barely Hanging On'

The pup, named Chance, was "touch and go" throughout his initial medical treatment at an Alabama animal shelter

A dog found "drenched in motor oil" in Alabama is now in recovery.

On Thursday, Sept. 12, the Montgomery Humane Society took in a male dog named Chance, who rescuers found "soaking wet" after someone left behind the oil-covered canine.

The shelter shared in a Sept. 13 Facebook post that it rushed the pup to a partnering veterinarian for treatment. "Upon arrival to the vet, he was barely hanging on due to severe anemia and the amount of oil he likely inhaled and ingested," Montgomery Humane wrote. "The vet's primary concern at the time was stabilizing him."

The humane society included two photos with the post. The first shows Chance, bundled in a white towel, receiving a blood transfusion while lying on a table covered in a blue blanket. The second image shows the sweet pup looking at the camera as he is propped on the table with yellow surgical tape on his front leg.

According to the post, Chance was "given fluids, a blood transfusion, and activated charcoal to help rid his body of toxins." The organization also shared that the dog was "touch and go" throughout the medical treatment but is currently in recovery.

Further examination showed that the canine suffered multiple injuries, including his hip being out of socket and a broken pelvis. It is suspected that the latter injury occurred "some time ago" and resulted in a break in "three different places."

The Montgomery Humane Society shared that the dog's "body composition score was rated at a 1, which means that on top of all the other indicators of abuse, he also suffered unimaginable hunger." The shelter specified that it is unaware if Chance was "purposely starved or if the untreated damage to hips have not allowed his colon to work properly."

They continued to write that they are "doing all we can to financially support" the rescue dog.

A Montgomery Humane Facebook update on Monday, Sept. 16, included a video of the dog eating out of a bowl. "Chance is eating well and has used the restroom," Montgomery Humane captioned the post. "His prognosis is looking better everyday! As he regains strength his care team will begin addressing the damage to his hip and pelvis! He still has a long road ahead of him, but it appears he is up for the challenge!"

In an interview with NBC affiliate WSFA-12, Kim Tears, the shelter's operations manager, asked locals to share any information they have on the dog so that those responsible for his injuries can be held accountable.

"We're asking for people from that community, if they've noticed anything on a Ring camera or have seen the dog in the neighborhood, any information that can be provided to us could help lead us to his previous owners or the individual that may have caused some of his suffering," Tears said.
