Is Anyone Else a Little Weirded Out By This Nicole Kidman Netflix Thriller Trailer? (And Not for the Reason You Might Think…)

Over the weekend, Netflix dropped a trailer for the sexy, murder-thriller limited series, The Perfect Couple. Nicole Kidman (does she sleep?) and Liev Schreiber star as a married couple at the helm of one of the Nantucket's wealthiest families. The show description reads: “Amelia Sacks is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season - until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.”

Will I be tuning in? You couldn't say “sexy, murder-thriller limited-series” fast enough. But there's one thing about the trailer that left me with a strange taste in my mouth... See, it's one thing for Kidman and Schreiber to be playing a married couple...

But it's another—and sure, maybe I'm overreacting!—to be having steamy sex scenes together, considering Schreiber is Naomi Watt's ex-husband (married 2005-2016 with two children), and Kidman and Watts have a storied Hollywood friendship. After meeting on the set of 1991's Flirting, Watts has shared in interviews over the years that Kidman was always one of her biggest supporters and best friends, even when Kidman's star was rising and Watts was still a mostly undiscovered actress.

Now, could that five-o-clock shadow whispering sweet nothings into Kidman's ear belong to someone other than Schreiber? Certainly. Blink and you'll miss this frame in the trailer. Plus, from the series' description alone, we know that whatever's going on with this family, it isn't exactly kosher.

However, it does seem kinda strange that it's Kidman and Schreiber starring in something, and not Kidman and Watts, considering how Kidman and Watts have professed how much they'd like to do a project together again. People reported back in June 2023: “Though they've never appeared in a film together since, Watts said during a March 2022 interview with Good Day New York that she and Kidman want to collaborate again ‘so we can have good, lengthy conversations on a daily basis and share meals.’”

So is there anything more to my reaction to this trailer or is it probably not that deep? Based on Watt's recent Instagram posts dedicated to her love for Kidman, I'll stick with the latter.

That said, if any of my girlfriends have a sex scene for a show on a major streaming network with my ex? We'll have some words.

The Perfect Couple premieres on September 5th on Netflix.
