Prescription hearing aids, on the other hand, are specifically fit to your individual needs for a more precise hearing fix, with additional hands-on support from a professional. OTC options are typically less customizable than traditional prescription models, but the aim is to conveniently increase volume at different pitches to enhance clearer sound, she says.

Best Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

OTC devices also tend to be far less expensive than their prescription counterparts. “This option empowers users to address their hearing needs independently while still aligning with their lifestyle and financial considerations,” says Amy Sarow, AuD, the lead audiologist at Soundly, an online hearing aid marketplace that compares hearing health options. “Price can often be a significant barrier in accessing hearing healthcare, so OTC hearing aids offer a more accessible entry point for individuals seeking assistance,” she says. After all, prescription devices can cost upwards of $4,000 while an OTC option averages around $1,500 a pair, with price varying according to functionality.

With that in mind, OTC hearing aids are not intended for those with complex hearing loss, asymmetric hearing loss, or those who require a more hands-on approach, says Sarow. In these cases, professional guidance from an audiologist and prescription hearing care is the better choice for a more tailored solution, she says.

Style

OTC hearing aids are available in various styles, so find one that comfortably fits your needs. Behind-the-ear or inner ear designs are typically more discreet, though earbud or one-piece styles may be more accessible for someone with poor vision or dexterity issues such as arthritis, says Schnitzspahn.

Connectivity

Bluetooth connectivity can be a key feature for streaming audio directly from smartphones or other devices, so it’s important to verify whether the hearing aid you’re considering is Bluetooth-enabled, says Sarow. Smaller devices, like those produced by Eargo, may not offer this feature due to their compact design, but other behind-the-ear styles are typically Bluetooth compatible for iOS and Android, she says. Additionally, if the hearing aids are controlled via an app to make necessary volume or setting changes, make sure you have the proper smart device to control the app (which may be difficult for less tech-savvy users), says Schnitzspahn.

No one wants their hearing aids to die after a few hours, so it’s best to opt for a device with a solid battery life, says Schnitzspahn. Ideally, most hearing should last at least 16 hours before needing to be recharged. Some hearing aids also come with a rechargeable case for a wire-free charge when you’re on the go.

Again, since OTC hearing aids are not purchased with a professional fitting, it’s imperative they come with a return policy and warranty in case you need to swap or return the device, says Sarow. A 45-day trial period is typical (though some options on this list extend to 100 days), but it’s essential to check prior to purchase to avoid any surprises.

The sleek design allows the device to fit comfortably in the ear canal (it’s about the side of a thumbnail), making it virtually invisible, and the breakthrough noise reduction technology delivers a clear and crisp sound experience, adds Ruth Reisman, AuD, an audiologist and co-founder of Urban Hearing. Based on your needs, you can either select “closed petals” on the device for minimized sound leakage and reduced feedback, or “open petals” for a more natural listening experience with all the sounds.

The water-resistant design is also great for sweaty workouts or when you momentarily forget to remove your Eargo before jumping in the shower, and the buds are easily cleanable with the included hygiene toolkit.

Our only qualm: the device does not offer Bluetooth connectivity due to its small size.

There’s also a social factor that comes into play, Sarow says. “While we are used to seeing people wear earbuds or headphones during the day in some settings, it feels a little different if we're sitting down to dinner or talking with someone one-on-one while they are wearing their AirPods.” However, if you or a loved one has mild hearing loss, AirPods Pro 2 can be a game-changer.
