8 Best Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids Of 2024

Here’s a startling statistic: about 15 percent (38 million) of American adults have some level of hearing loss. From there, men are almost twice as likely as women to have trouble hearing, and studies show approximately 28.8 million American adults could significantly benefit from wearing a hearing aid. Traditional prescription hearing aids can be pricey, but a new, more accessible option is skyrocketing in popularity: over-the-counter hearing aids.

Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are amplification devices that consumers who suffer from mild to moderate hearing loss can buy directly without a prescription, says Melissa Schnitzspahn, AuD, the audiology manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Prescription hearing aids, on the other hand, are specifically fit to your individual needs for a more precise hearing fix, with additional hands-on support from a professional. OTC options are typically less customizable than traditional prescription models, but the aim is to conveniently increase volume at different pitches to enhance clearer sound, she says.

Best Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

OTC devices also tend to be far less expensive than their prescription counterparts. “This option empowers users to address their hearing needs independently while still aligning with their lifestyle and financial considerations,” says Amy Sarow, AuD, the lead audiologist at Soundly, an online hearing aid marketplace that compares hearing health options. “Price can often be a significant barrier in accessing hearing healthcare, so OTC hearing aids offer a more accessible entry point for individuals seeking assistance,” she says. After all, prescription devices can cost upwards of $4,000 while an OTC option averages around $1,500 a pair, with price varying according to functionality.

With that in mind, OTC hearing aids are not intended for those with complex hearing loss, asymmetric hearing loss, or those who require a more hands-on approach, says Sarow. In these cases, professional guidance from an audiologist and prescription hearing care is the better choice for a more tailored solution, she says.

The best OTC hearing aids can enhance hearing accessibility and increase volume, so here are our top picks and how we came to them.

What to consider

Style

OTC hearing aids are available in various styles, so find one that comfortably fits your needs. Behind-the-ear or inner ear designs are typically more discreet, though earbud or one-piece styles may be more accessible for someone with poor vision or dexterity issues such as arthritis, says Schnitzspahn.

Connectivity

Bluetooth connectivity can be a key feature for streaming audio directly from smartphones or other devices, so it’s important to verify whether the hearing aid you’re considering is Bluetooth-enabled, says Sarow. Smaller devices, like those produced by Eargo, may not offer this feature due to their compact design, but other behind-the-ear styles are typically Bluetooth compatible for iOS and Android, she says. Additionally, if the hearing aids are controlled via an app to make necessary volume or setting changes, make sure you have the proper smart device to control the app (which may be difficult for less tech-savvy users), says Schnitzspahn.

Battery Life

No one wants their hearing aids to die after a few hours, so it’s best to opt for a device with a solid battery life, says Schnitzspahn. Ideally, most hearing should last at least 16 hours before needing to be recharged. Some hearing aids also come with a rechargeable case for a wire-free charge when you’re on the go.

Support

Since OTC hearing aids are not prescribed by a professional, it’s crucial that an OTC option offers reliable customer support, says Schnitzspahn. Some brands offer unlimited, free, on-demand support via an app or web browser, while others offer expert chat features or premium options for direct support with an audiologist.

Return Policy

Again, since OTC hearing aids are not purchased with a professional fitting, it’s imperative they come with a return policy and warranty in case you need to swap or return the device, says Sarow. A 45-day trial period is typical (though some options on this list extend to 100 days), but it’s essential to check prior to purchase to avoid any surprises.

How we chose

Men’s Health editors, including contributor Andi Breitowich, consulted three audiologists to determine what factors make the best OTC hearing aids stand out from the rest. We also researched the bestselling, most popular OTC hearing aids and combed through extensive testing notes to narrow down the top eight picks. Each option on this list was ranked based on key features including style, connectivity, battery, and return policy.

All-Day Clear Hearing Aids

The Sennheiser All-Day Clear OTC hearing aid hits all our best marks thanks to the high-quality audio, 45-day trial, and easily rechargeable battery. The device is manufactured by Sonova, a leading name in prescription hearing aids, and the modern design includes a receiver inside the ear canal for a particularly discreet look, says Sarow. The lightweight hearing aid also utilizes Bluetooth Classic which enables connectivity with two Bluetooth devices, including Android smartphones, iPhones, tablets, and laptops, so users can enjoy clear sound for calls, music, and conversation, Sarow says.

Vibrant hearing is easily customizable to your needs with the All-Day Clear mobile app, and depending on your preferences, you can either create your own sound profile or let automatic sound mode optimize to your environment. Plus, the easy-to-use app, user manual, and video tutorials will guide you from initial setup to advance personalization in just a few simple steps.

Also noteworthy: The varied ear tip sizes offer a personalized and comfortable fit, and the included wax guards support improved ear hygiene and longevity of the device.

CRE-C20

These newly-released OTC hearing aids are packed with prescription-grade technology for less than $1,000. The Sony CRE-C20 are incredibly discreet within the inner ear, though the tiny devices rack in 28 hours of battery life. The enhanced sound quality is crisp, with automatic noise reduction to prioritize speech clarity, and the pitch adjusts based on your surroundings to improve listening in any environment.

The FDA-cleared hearing aids are programmed through the Sony Hearing Control App available for both iPhones and Android, and the guided setup process only takes roughly 30 minutes. You can also schedule a one-on-one call with a member of the Sony support team to help fine tune your settings.

One downside: these hearing aids are not able to stream phone calls or music.

B2 Plus

"If simplicity is key, the Lexie B2 Plus stands out as a very user-friendly OTC device,” says Sarow. “This model is designed with ease of use in mind, featuring straightforward pictures and tips to guide users through the app setup process, and its intuitive design makes it accessible for individuals who may feel overwhelmed by complex technology, ensuring a smoother introduction to hearing health,” she says. The device also comes with free lifetime expert support for on-demand help when needed.

On top of that, you can expect clear sound quality thanks to the Bose technology and Bluetooth capabilities which are compatible for iPhone and Android devices, says Sarow. The hearing aids are also easily customizable and can be adjusted depending on the setting. For example, if you’re in a noisy restaurant, you can adjust the hearing aids so you can focus on the dinner conversation rather than outside voices. Or, if you’re on a walk outdoors, you can select the “everywhere” settings to hear everything from the birds chirping to the gravel under your feet.

7

“For those who prioritize discretion, Eargo presents an attractive OTC option,” says Sarow. The sleek design allows the device to fit comfortably in the ear canal (it’s about the side of a thumbnail), making it virtually invisible, and the breakthrough noise reduction technology delivers a clear and crisp sound experience, adds Ruth Reisman, AuD, an audiologist and co-founder of Urban Hearing. Based on your needs, you can either select “closed petals” on the device for minimized sound leakage and reduced feedback, or “open petals” for a more natural listening experience with all the sounds.

The water-resistant design is also great for sweaty workouts or when you momentarily forget to remove your Eargo before jumping in the shower, and the buds are easily cleanable with the included hygiene toolkit.

Our only qualm: the device does not offer Bluetooth connectivity due to its small size.

Enhance Select 500

If you’re looking for a high-tech hearing aid that’s lightweight and discreet, Reisman says the Jabra Enhance Select 500 is your pick. The small but mighty device has soundscape technology that incorporates three advanced key features for an exceptional hearing experience – built-in noise cancellation for reduced background sound, enhanced depth for awareness of where the sounds are coming from, and advanced acoustics for an immersive, natural sound. The TapControl capabilities also allow you to answer your smart device by simply double tapping your ear or hearing aid.

Just note that if you’re looking for extra customization and programming by an audiologist, like personalized noise filtering and automatic volume control, you must purchase an additional $200 premium package, says Reisman.

CRE-E10

The familiar earbud-style design of the Sony CRE-E10 is accessible, user-friendly, and simple to use, says Sarow. The high-quality technology is FDA-cleared and uses prescription-grade enhancements to automatically analyze, adjust, and optimize sounds based on your surroundings. Plus, the earbuds are wirelessly linked to deliver noise reduction and directionality from your environment.

Of note, Sarow says that users appreciate the app features which allow for directional microphone adjustments that help block out background noise, in addition to an instant fine-tuning tool that provides customization according to your preferences. You can also schedule a free one-on-one consultation with a hearing expert to customize your device via the Sony Hearing Control app.

AirPods Pro 2

Looking for an entry-level hearing aid to support mild hearing loss? Sarow says the new Apple AirPods Pro 2 is a great place to start. “The typical price for a quality OTC product is around 1000 dollars, but this new Apple AirPod option could be significantly more affordable for consumers,” she says. They’re sleek, wireless, and casual, and offer a breakthrough hearing experience in any environment with pro-level sound quality, sound optimization, and noise control. You’ll also have access to a hearing test, hearing aid capability, and active hearing protection to ensure your AirPods are perfectly tailored to your specific needs.

All that said, these AirPods do have limitations. First, they are not a full replacement for hearing aids. Instead, they are for those with mild hearing loss who need a situational boost. There’s also a social factor that comes into play, Sarow says. “While we are used to seeing people wear earbuds or headphones during the day in some settings, it feels a little different if we're sitting down to dinner or talking with someone one-on-one while they are wearing their AirPods.” However, if you or a loved one has mild hearing loss, AirPods Pro 2 can be a game-changer.

Tala

The Lucid Tala hearing aids may look like a typical pair of earbuds, but the compact device offers a fine-tuned listening experience. The rechargeable hearing aids are compatible with an iPhone or Android, and the precise Bluetooth connectivity allows you to stream directly from your phone—without a lag. You can also choose how much outside sound to allow while steaming for crisp audio. And if you need to adjust the sound, tone, or amplification, you can easily customize your settings directly through the Lucid Hearing app.

As for the hearing aids themselves, the sleek, modern design is comfortable for daily wear, and the 16 hour battery life is reliable whether you’re at work, in a crowded restaurant, or streaming your favorite show. The one year warranty also covers any issues you may encounter, though the online video tutorials are great for trouble-shooting.
