After more than 200 days, the NFL season has officially kicked off and every football fan in America is experiencing that rush of excitement as their favorite players take the field. With football games back and happening four—and sometimes more—days a week, we know home chefs are breaking out their favorite tailgating recipes and plenty of store-bought snacks.

Of course, players don't get to partake in tailgating festivities, but that doesn't mean they don’t share an affinity for the delicious pre-game spread. If you're like us, you might assume that these elite athletes, like San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, stick to a strict diet in order to maintain those famous bulging arms. But if we’ve learned anything from Travis Kelce’s love for Uncrustables and JJ Watt’s drive-thru habits at Culver’s, it’s that these footballers like to indulge, just like us.

Christian McCaffrey's Favorite Snack

McCaffrey described his daily eating habits in a 2019 interview with “GQ,” and while he does stick to a pretty structured diet, it doesn't consist of what you might expect. When he got drafted into the NFL, McCaffrey discovered that he had quite a few food intolerances—including chicken and wheat. So, that stereotype of eating only chicken and rice doesn't apply to the three-time Pro Bowler.

Instead, McCaffrey says his diet consists of things like bison chili, steak, sweet potatoes, and veggie stews and soups. While it all sounds very protein-heavy, the running back says he has “zero self control” when it comes to snacks (us, too, Christian).

So, what’s he reaching for when those snack cravings hit? None other than a total classic (and one of our favorites): Cool Ranch Doritos.

“Cool Ranch Doritos are definitely my guilty pleasure,” he told “GQ.” “If I have one Dorito, I’ll eat the entire king-size bag.”

McCaffrey isn’t the only NFL player who has shared his love for the flavored tortilla chip; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has described himself as a “big snacker,” especially “at nighttime.” However, unlike the 49ers running back, the defending Super Bowl champ opts for Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos instead.

It sounds like a Super Bowl rematch between McCaffrey and Mahomes might be in order—but this time, it’s the blue bag of Doritos vs. the purple.

However, this battle might be tough to orchestrate, since McCaffrey says he “can’t keep” Doritos in his house without eating the entire bag.

“Those and Oreos,” he told "GQ."

We’d like to think there’s a secret stash somewhere—and, if not, does anyone know the 49ers' address? Because someone needs to get that man his favorite snacks, ASAP!
