Future job ideas in case whatever it is you’re doing doesn’t work out: become a writer on Saturday Night Live, pivot to joining the cast, make the highest possible salary on the show, get invited to host the fun version of Jeopardy!, and rent out your mansion for $65,000 a month. Seem impossible? Please turn your attention to Colin Jost and his net worth origin story for inspiration.

First Up: Colin Jost’s SNL Salary

Colin started writing on Saturday Night Live alllllll the way back in 2005 and while we hope/assume that’s a good-paying job, it’s pretty hard to find verified salary info. But for what it’s worth, GlassDoor claims SNL writers’ salaries top out at $92,000 per year.

Either way, Colin added co-hosting Weekend Update to his list of responsibilities in 2014, making him an official SNL cast member. Which is where the real money comes in.

Turns out, the longer you work on SNL, the more money you make. First year cast members make around $7,000 per episode (or $147,000 for a 21 episode season); second year cast members get a small raise to $168,000 per season; and if you make it to five years on the show, your per-episode salary goes up to $15,000 per episode (or $315,000).

But the absolute most one can apparently make on the show is $25,000 per episode, or $525,000 per year based on a 21-episode season—which is Colin’s rumored take-home! Of course, SNL is a mere slice of his salary pie.

How Much Did Colin Jost Make for the Olympics?

There are reports that NBC paid Colin’s fellow Olympic correspondent Snoop Dogg $500,000 per day, plus expenses. So...$9 million for 18 days of the Olympics. Of course, Colin was only a correspondent for the surfing events, meaning his salary was likely lower. Either way, Colin joked that NBC was only paying him “hundreds” of dollars during an update on his injured foot.

Colin’s Other Sources of Income

Once you’re SNL famous, the offers for other projects pretty much roll in, and Colin has done quite a bit! On top of movies like Tom and Jerry and How to Be Single (his exact salaries for these are unknown), Colin does standup, and his book A Very Punchable Face: A Memoir was a New York Times best-seller.

He’s also the host of Pop Culture Jeopardy! coming to Amazon Prime, and gonna assume he wouldn’t take the gig for less than his SNL salary, so...add another half a million to his total.

He’s Made a Ton in Real Estate

Architecural Digest did a helpful deep dive on Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson’s real estate holdings, so we know exactly how many millions he has tied up in fancy houses. Back in 2011, the comedian spent $1.77 million on a West Village bachelor pad, which he sold at a profit for $2.32 million in 2022. Then in 2015, he purchased a Montauk home for $2.149 million—which the New York Post claims he rented out in 2023 for $65,000 per month.

Totally normal amount of money, don’t even worry about it.
