Kate Middleton Swapped Out Her Iconic Sapphire Engagement Ring For a New Infinity Wedding Band

Fans speculated that the subtle new accessory has a sweet meaning.

As Kate Middleton made a surprise virtual appearance alongside an unshaven Prince William on Sunday, all eyes were on the princess’s ring finger. In between all the thirsty comments over the William's new facial hair, fans were also quick to notice that the Princess of Wales wasn’t wearing her iconic wedding ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. Instead, Kate swapped out her giant sapphire and diamond bling for a more simple eternity ring that appears to have a special meaning.

Her newest accessory, a thick gold ring that appeared to be studded with diamonds and sapphires, was the star of the show as the princess rewore an old Ralph Lauren long-sleeved striped top in a video congratulating England’s athletes for their Olympics achievements. Kate didn’t wear her statement engagement ring–a stunning 12-carat oval sapphire engagement ring that’s encircled by 14 diamonds and harkens back to the 19th century–but the similar stones in her new band appeared to make it a matching set.

Kate, who’s no stranger to repurposing her old wardrobe staples, was previously spotted in the designer shirt during a SportAid charity event in London as well as during a grocery shopping trip in 2013. Wearing her signature glossy brunette waves in a sleek blowout, the royal was the epitome of casual glamour, adding a dainty silver choker and highlighting her features with a minimal makeup look.

Fans were quick to speculate that the new piece is an infinity ring, a sweet symbol of the couple’s ongoing commitment to each other as Kate undergoes treatment for cancer. While the princess hasn’t been spotted wearing the new sparkler yet in public, it’s also possible that it was a gift from William as the couple rang in their 13th wedding anniversary back in April.

In the celebrity cameo-filled video, Kate was all smiles as she addressed the athletes, "From all of us watching at home, congratulations to Team GB.” William, who stood by her side wearing a blue Olympics polo and a brand new beard added, "Well done on all you've achieved. You've been an inspiration to us all." The video, which was shared to the Prince and Princess of Wales's official Instagram page, was captioned, “Well done @teamgb, what an incredible journey! Every athlete showed immense dedication, heart and passion. You made us all so proud! Here’s to celebrating every triumph at @paris2024 and looking forward to more from @paralympicsgb_official later in the summer 🇬🇧🥇.”

The palace hasn’t announced when Kate will be making her next official appearance, especially as the family reportedly plans to spend the rest of the summer at Balmoral, but fans will be keeping an eye out to see if she’s retiring her old sapphire and diamond ring for good, or potentially pairing the two sparkly pieces together for a royal combination.
